    • A viscous coupling apparatus having first rotary member, a second rotary member coaxially disposed relative to the first rotary member such that the first and second rotary members are rotatable with respect to each other, and housings associated with each of the first and second rotary members for defining a hermetically seal fluid chamber. A first set of viscous clutch plates are disposed within the fluid chamber and are coupled for rotation with the first rotary member. A second set of viscous coupling plates are disposed in the fluid chamber and are coupled for rotation with the second rotary member. The first and second sets of viscous clutch plates being alternately interleaved so as to be rotatable relative to each other. The viscous coupling further comprising a plurality of annular spacer rings each of which is interposed between adjacent ones of the second set of viscous plates for longitudinally positioning the interleaved spacing between the first and second sets of clutch plates. According to the present invention, stop projections are formed on the housing which extend into the fluid chamber for inhibiting excessive axial sliding movement of the outermost second set clutch plates located adjacent thereto while maintaining a predetermined clutch plate pack spacing.

    • A split planetary gear assembly having a pair of helical gearsets. The first helical gearset includes a first sun gear, a first ring gear, and a set of first planet gears meshed with the first sun gear and the first ring gear. The second helical gearset includes a second sun gear, a second ring gear, and a set of second planet gears meshed with the second sun gear and the second ring gear. The components of the second helical gearset have the same number of teeth, helix angle, and tooth pitch as the components of the first helical gearset with the exceptions that their angular helix orientation (i.e., left-hand/right-hand) is reversed and they are circumferentially indexed by one-half tooth pitch. In addition, the first and second planet gears are arranged in paired sets and supported on a common pinion shaft which, in turn, is fixed to a planet carrier. The second sun gear is splined for rotation with and limited axial movement relative to the first sun gear.

    • A transfer case for a four wheel drive vehicle providing a central shaft defining a first output concentrically surrounded by a forward high/low drive range gear set and an aft dual planetary inter-axle differential gear set. A range clutch collar is disposed between the gear sets for selectively providing four wheel drive low range, neutral, and full-time four wheel drive high range. Likewise, a mode sleeve is disposed between the gear sets for selectively locking the differential gear set when the vehicle is shifted into its four wheel low range. Inner and outer relatively rotational drum housings surround the aft dual planetary differntial gear set for defining an annular viscous fluid coupling chamber therebetween. The inner drum is formed with internal annulus gear teeth meshed with a portion of the dual planetary gear set for rotation with the first output shaft while the outer drum is interconnected to a second output for providing full-time four wheel drive differentiation with limited slip between the first and second outputs.

    • A shift apparatus for shifting a transfer case between a two-wheel drive mode and a four-wheel drive mode. The shift apparatus includes a sector plate supported within the transfer case for rotation about an axis. A first pin member is biased into engagement with a first surface of the sector plate. The first pin member is adapted to move a first shift fork in response to selective rotation of the sector plate between first and second positions corresponding to the two-wheel drive mode and the four-wheel drive mode of the transfer case. The sector plate first surface has a first cam edge provided for positioning the first shift fork in the first position, a second cam edge for moving the first shift fork between the first position and the second position in response to rotation of the sector plate, and a third cam edge for retaining the said first shift fork in the second position upon continued rotation of the sector plate. According to the present invention, the second cam edge includes a plurality of sequentially ramped surfaces which are each adapted to cause a variable range of axial forces to be exerted on the first pin member during movement thereof between the first and second positions.

    • A torque transfer mechanism includes a friction clutch having first and second outer rings positioned on opposite sides of a center ring having conically shaped friction surfaces. The outer rings each include a plurality of conically shaped friction surfaces selectively engageable with the center ring friction surfaces. A clutch actuator includes a roller clutch having a first set of cam surfaces adapted to be fixed for rotation with a rotary input member, a slipper having a second set of cam surfaces, a plurality of rollers positioned between opposing pairs of the cam surfaces, a first wedge slide and a second wedge slide. Each wedge slide is radially outwardly moveable by radial expansion of the slipper and includes a tapered surface for driving one of the first and second outer rings into engagement with the center ring to transfer torque between the input and output members.
