    • A color cathode ray tube comprises a face panel having a phosphor screen formed on the inner surface thereof and a shadow mask. A mask body of the shadow mask has an effective surface opposed to the phosphor screen and formed having a plurality of electron beam passage apertures. The face panel and mask body are formed so as to establish relations: ZPD>ZPV>ZPH, ZMD>ZMH>ZMV, ZPD ZMV, where ZPD, ZPH, and ZPV are sags at a diagonal-axis end, horizontal-axis end, and vertical-axis end, respectively, with respect to the center of the inner surface of the face panel, and ZMD, ZMH, and ZMV are sags at the individual axis ends with respect to the center of the effective surface of the mask body.

    • The outer surface of a panel effective section of a vacuum envelope is substantially flattened. A phosphor screen is formed on the inner surface of the effective section and includes stripe-shaped phosphor layers and light absorption layers arranged in parallel. The panel effective section is formed such that a corner portion is 8 mm to 15 mm thicker than the central portion and the transmittance of the central portion is set at 40% to 60%. The phosphor screen is formed such that the ratio of the width of a light absorption layer to the pitch of phosphor layers in the central portion of the panel effective section is larger than or equal to that in the peripheral portion thereof. A shadow mask is opposed to the phosphor screen and has a mask body in which a number of electron beam passage apertures are formed. The pitch of apertures formed in the peripheral portion of the mask body is 1.3 to 1.4 times as large as that of apertures formed in the central portion thereof.

    • A main body 34 of a shadow mask is opposed to a phosphor screen and is formed in a substantially rectangular shape. The main body 34 has a main surface portion 31 where a number of electron beam apertures are formed, and a skirt portion 33 provided around the main surface portion with a non-aperture portion 32 interposed between the skirt portion and the main surface portion. A plurality of rectangular openings 38a extending in the long axis direction (or X-direction) of the mask body are formed at the skirt portion. Concave portions 47 extending in the long axis direction (X-direction) of the mask body are formed at the non-aperture portion. The openings and concave portions are provided within a range of about ¼ of the length W of the mask body in the long axis direction, with respect to a center of the range defined at a position distant from the short axis Y by about ⅓ of the length W of the long axis direction of the mask body.
