    • A 4-valve pulse tube cryocooler has, on a high-pressure end of a compressor, first and second coolant supply channels respectively connected to high-temperature ends of a regenerator and a pulse tube. The cryocooler further has, on a low-pressure end of the compressor, a first coolant recovery channel connected to the high-temperature end of the regenerator, a second coolant recovery channel connected to the high-temperature end of the pulse tube, and a third coolant recovery channel connected to the high-temperature end of the pulse tube via a common pipe and including a flow resistance member interposed between a flow control valve and the high-temperature end of the pulse tube.

    • A range of buffer volume/pulse tube volume ratios for two-stage hybrid GM type pulse tube cold-heads that are designed to produce refrigeration at 4 K are provided. The ranges of volume ratios for the first and second stages provides a good balance between the inefficiencies but compact size of a four-valve phase shifting mechanism and the better efficiency but larger size of a double-orifice phase shifting mechanism. The buffer volumes are small enough to be conveniently machined into the warm end housing, or as an option, one can be part of a valve disc housing. The drive motor for the valve disc is in an attached housing to make the valve disc readily accessible for service.

    • A helium-cooling type regenerator includes first and second storage spaces. The first storage space is disposed in a region on a high-temperature side, and accommodates the regenerator material whose pressure is P1. The second storage space is disposed in a region on a low-temperature side, and accommodates the regenerator material whose pressure is P2, which is less than P1. A specific heat in the case where a pressure of the regenerator material accommodated in the first storage space is P2 is less than that in the case where the pressure of the regenerator material is P1, and a specific heat in the case where a pressure of the regenerator material accommodated in the second storage space is P1 is less than that in the case where the pressure of the regenerator material is P2.
