摘要： A disklike storage medium on which information is recorded at higher density by reducing the redundancy of the address part and a tracking method using the medium are disclosed. The disklike storage medium where a track is divided into areas and address data is recorded in the areas is so adapted that an error detecting code for identifying the data common to adjacent tracks out of the address data is added to the common data. Thus, a data synchronization processing performed when the address data is reproduced is realized without any special synchronization pattern.

The reproducing optical system is configured for converging light on a prescribed converging point, and a filter having a light transmissive region for allowing light in the vicinity of a center of the converged light to selectively pass therethrough is provided in the vicinity of the converging point. The light transmissive region of the filter is formed by light which has passed through at least a part of the reproducing optical system and has been converged.

A pattern extraction step extracts, from the binary signal, a specific state transition pattern which has the possibility of causing a bit error; a step computes a differential metric based on the binary signal; an extraction step extracts the differential metric which is not greater than a predetermined signal processing threshold; a step determines a mean value of the differential metrics which are not greater than the signal processing threshold and extracted in the extraction step; a standard deviation computing step determines a standard deviation which corresponds to an error rate predicted from the mean value; and an evaluation step evaluates a quality of the reproduction signal using the standard deviation.
