    • A pipe loop arrangement for the closed primary system of a nuclear reactor. The heated reactor coolant flows through a horizontally positioned hot leg pipe while the return flow cooled reactor coolant flows through a cold leg pipe concentrically mounted within the hot leg pipe. A bell-mounted suction port and the high pressure discharge port of the reactor coolant pump are located within an outlet chamber with the steam generator. A transition piece slip fitted to an opening within the reactor vessel outlet flange connects the cold leg pipe to the inlet to the nuclear core. A flow shroud surrounding the pump discharge connects the pump discharge to the cold leg pipe, forms a volute for the pump discharge and separates the outlet chamber from the inlet chamber of the steam generator.

    • The lower end of a nuclear reactor core barrel (16) is laterally stabilized within the reactor pressure vessel (10) by four auxiliary support structures (100) equiangularly disposed about the periphery of the reactor lower hemispherical shell (12). The core barrel lower support plate (18) has keys (122) secured thereto for disposition within recesses (114) defined within crossbeams (102) of the structures (100) through which horizontal radial and tangential forces, as well as severe vertical loads, are transmitted from the core barrel (16) to the reactor vessel (10). Shock absorbers (120) interconnect the keys (122) and the crossbeams (102), and divergent brackets (104) serve to radially space the crossbeam (102) from the shell wall (12) so as to define a vertical coolant flow channel (108) through each structure (100). The divergent brackets (104) serve to distribute radial loads from the core barrel (16) to the pressure vessel (10) as radial compression forces, and to convert tangential bending moments into circumferential shear and radial compression forces. Upper inclined portions (162) of the brackets (104) serve to vertically centralize the center of load (160) of horizontal tangential forces relative to the brackets' centers of gravity (152) so as to eliminate vertical bending moments, and inclined lower portions (139) of the brackets (104) serve to convert vertical bending loads into circumferential shear and radial compression forces.

    • A pivoted pad bearing assembly of the Kingsbury type provides for leveling of bearing pads arranged in a circular array utilizing hydrostatic pressure rather than mechanical links. The leveling device is in the form of a hydraulic bearing support module having a variable volume hydraulic chamber. Pipe segments connect each hydraulic chamber to form a closed circuit and the circuit is completely filled with hydraulic fluid. Thereby, equal force will be exerted upon each pad at all times so that all pads will operate at an equal thrust load. The bearing assembly has particularly useful application in an integral motor submersible propulsor as a large diameter thrust bearing housed within an outer shroud of the propulsor at both upstream and downstream ends of a rotor mounted about the periphery of a propeller of the propulsor. By placing the thrust bearing within the shroud, greater thrust bearing surface areas can be obtained to handle larger thrust. By using hydrostatic leveling, the noise associated with mechanical linkages is avoided, and the size and weight of the bearing assembly can advantageously be reduced.

    • A flywheel assembly adapted to act also as a high inertia journal bearing in a canned pump or the like is composed of an annular core of heavy metal material which is hermetically sealed in a stainless steel casing formed by a number of enclosure pieces welded together along circumferential weld edges. The weld edges are specially configured by mating weld canopies provided on the respective pieces which minimize the potential for damage to the annular core during welding, and which act to minimize stress concentrations due to the welds and thermal expansion of the casing. An outer cylindrical shell of the casing is heat shrunk onto the outer core and grooves are provided in the outer surface of the annular core to axially secure the outer enclosure member to the core, and to ensure that thermal expansion of the cylindrical shell occurs substantially equally in each axial direction of the shell. The flywheel assembly includes radial and axial bearing surfaces provided on the outer casing. The casing configuration protects the heavy annular core, which may include depleted uranium, from oxidation and a reliable hermetic seal is insured by the welded edge configuration.

The particular heat pipe positioning and configuration provides an optimal amount of heat transfer surface area for transferring heat from the wedge material to a volatile fluid within the heat pipe. Heat is thus efficiently transferred to the volatile fluid which changes the volatile fluid from a liquid phase to a vapor phase where the vapor flows at a high speed to a condenser section beyond the axial length of the rotor field windings where heat is dissipated from the volatile fluid to the cooling medium.

    • A pressurized water reactor of an advanced design comprises, in vertically spaced relationship, a lower barrel assembly having lower and upper core plates, an inner barrel assembly and an axially removable calandria assembly having a lower calandria plate. A plurality of rod guides are cantilever-mounted in parallel axial relationship within the inner barrel assembly and, specifically, are rigidly mounted at the lower ends thereof to the upper core plate. Axially extending sleeves are affixed to the upper ends of the rod guides and telescopingly receive therein generally cylindrical supports which are affixed to and depend downwardly from the lower calandria plate and define alignment axes for the respectively associated rod guides. Links are secured at first ends to the mount and extend radially therefrom at angularly displaced positions, second, free ends of the links being free to move in pivotal rotation from a normal, downward and radially inward position to an upward and radially outward position, when engaged by receiving means formed in the upper ends of the sleeves as the calandria assembly is moved into assembled relationship with the inner barrel assembly. In the assembled relationship, the links, moved fully to the upward and radially outward positions, produce resilient, lateral loading between the respective sleeves and cylindrical mounts and maintain alignment of the associated sleeves and rod guides with the respective alignment axes.

    • A locking ring for preventing inadvertent unfastening of threaded fasteners comprises a substantially cylindrical ring having a slot extending the entire width of the ring for allowing the ring to be easily compressed to fit into a counterbore that is slightly smaller than the uncompressed ring. The locking ring also comprises at least one protrusion on the outer surface of the ring that is capable of being inserted into an indentation in the counterbore when the ring is inserted in the counterbore. The locking ring is capable of having a threaded member disposed therethrough when the locking ring is disposed in the counterbore. The locking ring may also be crimped so as to engage the threaded fastener disposed therein so that the interconnection of the locking ring with the counterbore and threaded fastener prevents inadvertent unfastening of the threaded fastener.
