A decoding method includes selecting operation modes of at least one of the branch metric calculator, the processor, and the path memory between a first operation mode in which an operation is performed at a channel rate frequency and a second operation mode in which an operation is performed at a specific frequency lower than the channel rate frequency.

    • According to one embodiment, a digital data decoding apparatus calculates branch metrics of all paths in an input data series from the path at a state of a current time to the path at a state of a next time, and obtains path metrics of all the paths up to the path at the state of the next time by adding the calculated branch metric to the path metric of the path corresponding to the branch metric.
