    • In an internal combustion engine having at its intake section a two-barrel type carburetor including a primary fuel supply system having a primary main fuel supply line and a primary slow fuel supply line and a secondary fuel supply system having a secondary main fuel supply line and a secondary step fuel supply line, and at its exhaust section a three-way catalytic converter, there is provided an improved closed loop type air-fuel ratio control system which controls not only the amount of air fed to the primary main and slow fuel supply lines but also the amount of air fed to the secondary main and step fuel supply lines in accordance with the concentration of a selected component of the engine exhaust gas. A switching valve is associated with both the primary slow fuel supply line and the secondary main or step fuel supply line so as to alter the course of the air introduction into the primary slow fuel supply line or into the secondary main or step fuel supply line in accordance with the engine load.

    • An air-fuel ratio control system is disclosed for use with a carburettor including an air-fuel induction passage provided therein with a throttle valve. The system comprises a control circuit responsive to various engine operating factors for deriving an engine operating condition and providing a pulse signal having a constant period and a pulse width corresponding to the derived engine operating condition, fuel supply means for supplying fuel, a fuel passage connected at its one end to the fuel supply means and at the other end to the induction passage downstream of the throttle valve, and a control valve provided in the fuel passage, the control valve responsive to the pulse signal from the control circuit for controlling the flow of fluid passing therethrough thereby providing an optimum air-fuel ratio corresponding to the engine operating condition.

    • A fuel injector of the invention comprises a plurality of parallel, threadlike tubes for admitting electrostatically charged fuel and an accelerator electrode biased at the opposite potential to that applied to a fuel charging electrode. The fuel admitted through the parallel tubes is atomized at the outlet port of the tubes as a result of electrostatic repulsion between charged particles, and attracted and accelerated by an electrode spaced from the outlet port of the tubes. A control electrode may be provided spaced from the accelerator electrode adjacent to the outlet port of the tubes and biased at a potential with respect to the accelerator electrode much lower than the potential applied across the accelerator and fuel-charging electrodes. By varying the potential at the control electrode, the fuel quantity delivered can effectively be controlled.
