    • An image forming apparatus and method produce, when 600 dpi image data is generated from 300 dpi image data, interpolated data of a pixel of interest by a two-value logical operation in a case where the image data about the periphery of the pixel of interest appertains to binary representation. When the image data is judged to appertain to an image of multivalued representation, the interpolated data of the pixel of interest is produced by a numerical operation. As a result, a 600 dpi picture of the same size can be printed and recorded in such a manner that outline sharpness and smoothness, which are characteristics possessed by a two-value image, are maintained at portions of the input 300 dpi image data that are two-value images while smoothness of the grayscale is maintained at portions of the input 300 dpi image data that are halftone images.

    • When a multiple-color image is printed by electrophotography unwanted spaces are produces between different colors. These spaces are attributed to non-development of toner caused by the influence of an electric field at the boundary of an electrostatic latent image formed on a photosensitive drum. Accordingly, when data conversion is converted from two-bit data of a bitmap to eight-bit data that are used for modulating a light signal, a pixel of interest and the neighboring 9×9 pixels are stored and the state thereof is determined. If the pixel of interest is a white pixel and the neighboring pixels are all non-white pixels, then the pixel of interest is not left at a value corresponding to white, but is converted to a value corresponding to a potential that will not develop toner. The photosensitive drum is irradiated with a laser based upon the data resulting from the conversion. Thus, a sudden conversion from a potential corresponding to white to a potential corresponding to the maximum density is eliminated at the outline of the image. This makes it possible to prevent the influence of an electric field at the edge of the image and, hence, to prevent the occurrence of unwanted spaces between colors.

    • A recording apparatus of the electrophotographic system such as a laser beam printer is provided. An image processing apparatus which is connected between a recording control section and a recording mechanism section of such a recording apparatus is also provided. The apparatus comprises: an input unit for inputting image information of a density lower than a recording density of the recording mechanism section produced by the recording control section; a memory to store the image information supplied from the input unit by an amount of a plurality of main scan lines; a referring circuit to refer to the image information of a target pixel as a recording pixel and its peripheral pixels from the image information group stored in the memory; a detector to detect that the recording pixel and its peripheral pixels form a part of a predetermined half tone pattern which is constructed by a plurality of pixels as a result of the reference by the referring circuit; a converter to convert the image information of the recording pixel into the image information of a density which is at least equal to or larger than a recording density of the recording mechanism section in accordance with the result of the detection by the detector; and a transmitting circuit to transmit the image information converted by the converter to the recording mechanism section.
