    • An apparatus for rotatably journaling a rotor of a flat spindle motor about a stator comprising a spindle magnet disc disposed on the rotor assembly of the flat spindle motor and journaled about the spindle motor shaft having a disc shaped first magnetized region with an outer radius r comprised of a plurality of axial aligned poles, a disc shaped second region having an outer radius r2 (where r2>r) comprised of a single pole, and a disc shaped non-magnetized spacer region disposed there between. The integrated spindle magnet disc is disposed on the inside surface of a rotor over complementary axially aligned electromagnet poles which are disposed on the base of the stator assembly. A like aligned single pole is fixedly attached to the stator and disposed in opposition to the second magnetized region having like aligned pole of the integrated spindle permanent magnet. The single poles are disposed on both the rotor and stator in attraction mode with opposite poles facing one another, or in opposition mode with a complete or partial offset thereby forming a stable magnetic bearing for maintaining rotor displacement about the stator in conjunction with a conventional pivot. The stator base assembly is extended toward the first magnetized region to provide axial pre-load for the motor. The electromagnet poles further include a steel bobbin for increased flux density and added axial stiffness. Finally, eddy current generation means are disposed between the stator base and the like aligned single pole for improved dampening characteristics.

    • The present method and apparatus detects the rotor position of a brushless DC motor with an accuracy of .pi./m electrical radians (where m = the number of motor phases) within one electrical period, and provides enough information to enable starting the motor in the correct direction with certainty. After starting the motor in an open loop mode of one or two steps, a closed loop mode may be switched on, using a dynamic indirect position detection as is already well known in the technology. More specifically, the position at start is determined by the injection of short current pulses in different motor phases, each phase or pair of phases being energized first by a pulse of one polarity and of the opposite polarity. The sign of the time difference between the decay times of the induced voltages in the un-energized phase is detected. By performing a succession of these tests on different phases or pairs of phases of the standing motor, a table of results is established which clearly defines the position of the rotor relative to the motor phases. The same table then defines what polarity currents should be applied to each phase to reliably and certainly start the motor in the proper direction.

Monitoring the resonant frequency relative to a desired frequency provides in error signal that can be used to frequency lock the resonant scanning assembly to an input signal.

    • A microprocessor-controlled-circuit applies pulses to a standing motor whose rotor position is to be determined. The time required for the injected current to reach a predetermined threshold in a comparator is measured. The pulses are long enough to effectuate an accurate measurement, but not so long that the rotor moves. The pulse is applied twice to each phase, once with a positive polarity and once with a negative polarity, for a total of six measurements. The positive and negative rise times are subtracted from each other to determine whether the positive or negative current rise time was greater. Based upon the differences in the readings for all of the phases, the position of the rotor is known. There are differences in which the difference is zero or negligible. There are at least two methods to determine rotor position when there are ambiguities in the sign of the difference. In one method, the combination of the sign of the rise time difference or its absence plus the magnitude of the rise time can be used along with look-up tables to determine the rotor position. Another method is to resolve a position uncertainty by changing the effective rotor position. This is done by pulsing all three phases actively. Instead of leaving a phase open during pulsing, the third phase is tied high or is tied low. Once start-up ambiguities are resolved, control of acceleration from stand-still through medium speed to constant, nominal speed is provided.

    • An actuator, suited for rapidly and precisely locating the head of a disc drive, reduces variations in flux density and reluctance torque across the entire effective stroke width of the actuator. The actuator, cooperating with a voice coil motor, includes a central yoke, upper and lower yokes aligned above and below the central yoke, and side yokes all formed of magnetic permeable material, a coil movable over the central yoke, and magnets supported from the upper and lower yokes and aligned with the stroke width of the coil. The upper and lower yoke pieces are profiled to have an increased radius in the region near the ends of these yokes and near the end of the coil stroke arc. This maximizes the flux density passing through these yokes so that the flux density and torque applied to the actuator is made linear. The simple structure improves performance without any substantial increase in the design envelope and operates at high efficiency. Alternative configurations provide for portions of the central pole piece beyond the end of the stroke of the coil to become gradually wider or thicker so that the flux flow around the corners where the central pole piece meets the side pieces of the yoke does not saturate and reduce torque at the actuator, and a variation where the magnets are shaped in the vertical axis perpendicular to the plane of motion of the coil in order to promote the flux passage or distribution through the yoke.
