    • A method of manufacturing improved strontium or barium ferrite carrier particles for use in two-component electrographic developer compositions for the development of electrostatic charge patterns is provided in which the tendency toward early life dusting of the strontium or barium ferrites is reduced.Such strontium or barium ferrite carrier particles are obtained by (i) mixing unreacted particles of iron oxide and barium or strontium oxide or, alternatively, a salt of barium or strontium convertible to the corresponding oxide by heat upon subsequent firing in a mole ratio of iron oxide to the metal oxide or salt of exactly 5.95 to 6.0:1 with an organic binder and a polar solvent, preferably water, to form a slurry, (ii) spray drying the slurry to obtain green beads of substantially uniform particle size and substantially spherical shape, and (iii) firing the beads at a temperature of from 1150.degree. to 1175.degree. C. for 10 hours to form magnetic strontium or barium ferrite carrier particles of substantially uniform particle size and substantially spherical shape having a reduced tendency towards early life dusting.

    • A transseptal left atrial cannulation system which provides drainage of left atrial blood without the need for thoracotomy. A guide wire and a long needle assembly are inserted into a catheter. A cannula rides over the exterior of this catheter. The guide wire may be advanced past the needle assembly and through a catheter through the distal end of the catheter to assist in directing the system to the right atrium. The cannulation system is inserted in a femoral vein located in the groin. Both the guide wire and needle assembly are long enough to allow a substantial length to extend out of the body at the groin for manipulation even when the distal ends of the guide wire and needle assembly are positioned in the heart. When the catheter distal end is positioned adjacent the septum in the right atrium, the guide wire is withdrawn from the catheter orifice and the needle assembly moves past the guide wire and through the catheter orifice to a position adjacent to the septum. The needle pierces the septum and the catheter moves over the needle assembly to further dilate the septal hole. The cannula attached to the catheter also moves through the septal hole, further dilating it, and resting with the holes in the left atrium. The guide wire, the needle assembly, and the catheter are withdrawn from the cannula. Oxygenated blood from the left atrium drains through the cannula to the extracorporeal pump and back to the body through an arterial cannula.

    • An improved turbopump unit and system for pumping hot geothermal liquids from deep wells to the earth's surface. The unit is of simplified single-shaft construction with reduced net reaction thrust on the shaft. Bearing wear is minimized by using hydrostatic bearings and by supplying lubricating liquid thereto which is taken from an intermediate stage of a centrifugal pump at the surface which supplies motive liquid to the turbine. An arrangement is provided that is operated by pressure of the lubricating liquid for maintaining all thrust-engageable surfaces carried by the shaft out of engagement at start-up and shut-down. Means operated by liquid pressure are provided for sealing the unit to the well casing and also for preventing undue tensile or compressive stresses in the supply conduit for the turbine motive liquid while maintaining an effective seal between the unit and the well casing.

    • A sea thermal power plant is provided with pumps of the propeller type for bringing up cold water and forcing it through suitable condensers or heat exchangers and for drawing a continuous flow of warm water from a surface layer of the sea and forcing it down through suitable heat exchangers or boilers of the plant. The water so drawn from the sea flows through the heat exchangers and is subsequently discharged therefrom, which action creates thrust thereby producing forces to move the plant over the water surface. The heat exchangers are provided with deflectors which control the direction of discharge to produce a reaction force in any desired direction to drive the power plant. The pumps have associated therewith pipes which have located therein, downstream of the pumps, bypass louvres or vanes which can be opened to discharge water directly into the sea to produce a higher thrust for moving or positioning the power plant.
