    • The invention relates to a method for the quantitative determination of surface properties, wherein a spatially resolved image of a surface to be analysed, which contains a large number of measured values, is recorded. In a first method step, the measured values are analysed in order to determine those surface areas which have a specific physical property. A result value of this physical property is then determined, wherein this result value is characteristic of the values of the physical property of all those surface areas of the image determined by analysing the image. According to the invention, in addition to the result value, a further value (B) characteristic of the surface is determined and this characteristic value is displayed together with the result value (I).

    • Various embodiments of a method, system and article of manufacture to access metadata from a plurality of data servers from a federated database management system are provided. In one embodiment, a request for metadata, from a client application, is received by the federated database management system. Data servers which are accessible from the federated database management system are identified. For each data server, metadata describing data of a data source of that data server is retrieved in accordance with the application request. The retrieved metadata from each of the data servers is aggregated to produce an aggregated result in a uniform format. The aggregated result is provided. In another embodiment, for each data server, a source metadata request for metadata of that data server is generated in accordance with the application request and a source metadata application programming interface. A view is created based on the source metadata request for metadata for each data server.

    • Switching devices in which current contacts are made by actuating a magnetic armature, are tested by analyzing the vibrations or sound emission occurring under operating conditions. According to the present invention, the sound emitted by the switching device when it is actuated is detected by a sensor and is transmitted to an evaluation device for discriminating the time and/or frequency curve of individual sound components. With the process of the present invention, discriminating between the sound signals produced by the making of the contacts on the one hand, and the striking of the armature on the other hand, is possible. In addition, a sound analysis in a suitable time range permits any faults present in the switching device to be classified. Finally, especially in the application to flashing signal relays, whether the sound of the relay is proper, can be objectively determined. In all cases, particularly the high frequency sound components are evaluated.
