    • Improvement of read/write access performance with respect to a disk is proposed. A controller manages a first volume format LDEV, in which each distributed user data area and each distributed information area among a plurality of the distributed user data areas for storing a data part and a plurality of the distributed control information area for storing a control information part, are targets that capacity is changed.     • A fuel supply apparatus is provided which works to supply fuel such as a dimethly ether used as an alternative to a typical fuel for an internal combustion engine. The fuel supply apparatus includes a high-pressure pump working to feed the to injectors from a fuel tank through a common rail, a fuel return line, and a compressor working to add to a back pressure higher than a vapor pressure of the fuel to the return line. The addition of the back pressure higher than the vapor pressure of the fuel facilitates liquidizing of the fuel. This results in a decrease in leakage of the fuel, which improves the efficiency of burning of the fuel and ensures the startability and drivability of the engine.

    • The invention provides an encoder for subjecting an input signal to the orthogonal transform for band compression and encoding. The encoder has a sample and hold circuit which samples the input signal at a sampling frequency three times that of the input signal, and an orthogonal transform unit which subjects the sampled signal to the orthogonal transform using as a coefficient an orthogonal matrix function of the order of 3n (where n is an integer of 2 or more) having as a minor matrix an orthogonal matrix of the order of 3: ##EQU1## having given numbers a, b and c as matrix elements. By maintaining the sampling frequency low, the frequency components of the input signal may be concentrated in a small number of transform outputs without causing an increase in the amount of data to be processed, without using a multiplier and without requiring an increase in the processing speed. The input signal is thus effectively band compressed and encoded.
