    • In a structure to support wheels freely rotatably in relation to a vehicle body via a bearing section, the bearing section is formed from a tapered roller bearing that has an inner member 1, an outer member 2 fitted on the inner member 1 from the outside and double rows of tapered rollers 3 interposed between the inner member 1 and the outer member 2. The outer member 2 has double raceway surfaces 12 where the tapered rollers 3 move rolling thereon, and hardened layers at least on the raceway surfaces 12 and in relieving recesses 13 thereof. The inner member 1 is formed from a hub 1a having a wheel mounting flange 1a2 and an annular member 1b fixed on the outer circumference of the hub 1a, and has raceway surfaces 12, where the tapered rollers 3 move rolling thereon, formed on the outer circumference of the hub 1a and on the outer circumference of the annular member 1b.

    • A hub unit bearing assembly includes a tapered roller bearing including an inner race (3), an outer race (4) having a fixture (4a) defined therein so as to extend radially outwardly therefrom, and a multiplicity of rollers (5) retained in a circumferential row by a cage (6) and rollingly positioned between the inner race (3) and the outer race (4).     • In an assembly of retainers and tapered rollers to be easily incorporated into an outer ring having a rib portion on an inner peripheral surface on an outboard side thereof, recesses are formed in a large end surface and a small end surface of an outboard side tapered roller. A diameter of a circumcircle of the tapered rollers before they are inserted into a hub ring is smaller than an inner diameter of a rib portion. When a hub ring is inserted into the outer ring, the tapered rollers move in a radial direction to cause the diameter of the circumcircle to be greater than the inner diameter dimension of the rib portion, and as a result, the tapered rollers can be received in a specified position.
