摘要： A system, method and means is provided for withstanding mechanical shock for use with fluid dynamic bearings. A sealing system is provided that withstands 1000 G shock events. In an aspect, a grooved pumping seal employed between a thrust plate and a shield, a thrust plate having spiral grooves, a fluid recirculation passageway, and a reservoir creates an asymmetric pressure gradient. In an aspect, fluid is retained and air is purged utilizing an enlarged fluid reservoir, axial channels and an angled fill hole. In an aspect, a shaft is attached to a top cover supplying radial stiffness, and an enlarged single-sided thrust plate improves dynamic parallelism.

摘要： An improved, simplified spindle motor design for use in a disc drive is provided, which utilizes a two-piece shaft and provides a central connector in the bottom section of the shaft which can be easily connected through the base to a power source for the motor. The improved spindle motor has a stator and motor connector which can be easily assembled into the spindle motor before the bearings and other elements are installed so that the cleaning and soldering of the stator and motor connector can be efficiently achieved. Further, the spindle and motor connector design incorporates an effective electrical grounding path between the stator and the central shaft of the spindle motor.

摘要： An improved spindle motor design of a type especially for use in a disc drive is disclosed, which provides a simplified design for installation of the stator over the shaft, and should especially locate the stack both radially and axially in a specific location relative to the shaft so that its location relative to the surrounding, rotating parts of the motor is fixed. In addition, the improved spindle motor design fixes the stack on the shaft through radial interference, eliminating the need for adhesive to fix the stator to the shaft. Also, the design minimizes the cost of assembling the stack on the shaft, isolates the stack and shaft from conveying vibration one to the other, and electrically grounds the stack to the shaft.

In one embodiment, a disk drive motor includes a stationary assembly and a rotating assembly having a fluid dynamic journal bearing disposed therebetween. A capillary seal is defined proximate an upper end of the journal bearing and coupled to at least one re-circulation path. The capillary seal is configured to advantageously retain lubricating fluids within the motor when the motor is subjected to lateral shock.

摘要： Improved capillary sealing is provided for withstanding shock events, vibration and evaporation, for use with fluid dynamic bearings. In an aspect, minimal axial space is occupied by a fluid reservoir and the sealing system and method withstands at least 1000 G shock events. A fluid reservoir having a capillary surface is formed between diverging walls. A fluid fill pool, separate from the fluid reservoir and having a steeper angle than the fluid reservoir, is positioned adjacent to a fluid fill hole. The fill pool, having a greater diverging angle than the fluid reservoir provides an unstable region for fluid to remain and any fluid is pulled by capillary force gradient to the fluid reservoir.
