    • An apparatus, system and method are described for generating a continuous and linear position signal generated from stitched position error signal (PES) components, for use by a servo control system in positioning a transducer with respect to a storage surface. Continuity is achieved by providing a normalization stage in the servo control loop for correcting discontinuities at the stitch points with minimal impact to the PES zero-crossing points. According to a first preferred embodiment normalization is applied using an algorithm determined by the width of the read transducer. According to a second preferred embodiment, normalization is selectively applied near the stitch points of the PES components, but is not applied at their zero-crossing points. In another preferred embodiment, a first normalization algorithm is applied near the stitch points, and a second normalization algorithm is applied at the zero-crossing points. In a fourth embodiment, a smoothing function is applied between the stitch points and zero-crossings to smooth the transition from normalized to unnormalized signal contributions or from signal contributions normalized in a first manner to signal contributions normalized in a second manner. A further aspect of the present invention is to determine whether the PES exceeds a nominal value and if so, to hold the PES at the nominal value at each stitch point.

    • Disclosed is a data recording disk file having multiple actuators mounted on a common pivot axis, one of the actuators having fewer arms and lower inertia characteristics than the other. A servo system separately drives each of the actuators for seek repositioning, the lower inertia actuator having a higher performance than the other. A controller selectively records one type of data on the data surfaces associated with the lower inertia actuator, and records all other data on the other data surfaces, thereby providing a disk drive with increased performance appropriate to the data stored on the surfaces associated with the lower inertia actuator. A removable locking pin may be provided which extends through corresponding holes in each of the actuators for maintaining the actuators precisely positioned with respect to each other so that servo information may be written on each of the surfaces in a single process. Additionally, one of the actuators may be provided with a shorter stroke than the other actuators. Further, the tracks of the data surfaces associated with one of the actuators may have a different track pitch than the other data surfaces.

    • A gray code is provided for use with disk servo track identification encodement that preserves the gray code property of only a single digit changing state between two numbers in the code sequence and also preserves magnetization between code numbers while only requiring a single bit for encoding each code value by recording a single pad bit before the gray code bits. By proper selection of the sign of the pad bit and the gray code numbering sequence, the gray code encodement scheme uses n+1 code bits for an n-bit gray code. The efficiency of the gray code encodement can be enhanced by splitting the track identification number to be recorded into multiple fields and then recording only the low order bits sufficient to identify a track within the maximum estimated error of the servo head on every track and otherwise alternating the high and low middle order bit fields with the low order bit field. A run-length limiting feature also can be provided. One way is for the encoded bits to be broken into fields so that only two are written in each sector. The two fields are concatenated and encoded so that the length of the field is shorter than the run-length limit. Alternatively, the code sequence can be obtained as a subsequence of a larger sequence. This subsequence then obeys the run-length limit.

    • A hard disk drive for a computer system has at least two actuators for reading data from or writing data to the disks. The actuators may be configured to support the different methods of data access required of them. For example, if large quantities of sequential data are performed, one operation uses both actuators to increase throughput. However, if mostly random operations are to be performed, then independent usage of the actuators is preferred. These two methods of usage can be supported simultaneously, and can even be dictated by the user. The tracking format of the actuators can be configured such that the next logical track is physically located under a head on a different actuator to improve sequential operation. The actuators also may be utilized in a dual-channel configuration so that data can be written to both actuators at the same time, or read back at the same time to improve throughput. In addition, either of these configurations can be selected on a transfer-by-transfer basis by the user.

    • A method and system in accordance with the present invention for minimizing the loss of data by a write head is disclosed. The method comprises providing a desired write head width based upon a hard error rate. The method further comprises adjusting at least one parameter of the servo control logic based upon a comparison of the width of the write head and the desired write head width, wherein the write head will not exceed the hard error rate when writing data. Through the use of a system and method in accordance with the present invention a servo system can be designed based on a constant hard error rate. The write inhibit window and the settle delay for writing operations in a servo system will be optimized, based on the hard error rate, for each individual head in the disk drive configuration. This will increase the speed of the servo process without affecting the reliability of the data.

    • A direct access storage device (DASD) servo control system detects a servo pattern recorded in multiple cells of a servo sector and compares the cell-to-cell readback signal independently of the position error signal (PES). A servo sector of the disk contains multiple servo identification cells such that a servo readback signal is generated for each cell. If the servo signal data from two successive cells of a single sector, or from the same cell of successive sectors, differs by an amount greater than a predetermined error threshold, then a physical jarring or shock is indicated and the servo control system causes a write inhibit command to the write channel.

    • A computer disk drive unit having a control system that uses a separate velocity profile for read seeks and for write seeks is disclosed. Appropriate velocity profiles are provided according to whether a seek operation is a read seek operation or a write seek operation. The control system includes a memory for storing an initial velocity profile and a processor for determining whether a read seek operation or a write seek operation is to be performed. The processor obtains the initial velocity profile from memory to produce a read velocity profile or a write velocity profile. The processor multiplies the velocity profile obtain from the memory by a predetermined constant to derive the read velocity profile when the processor determines that a read operation is to be performed. Then the processor repositions the head according to the write velocity profile or the read velocity profile. The processor may also multiply the initial velocity profile by a write profile coefficient to obtain the write velocity profile. A monitor may be provided for monitoring disk drive performance parameters and providing the processor with data concerning the performance parameters, wherein the processor enforces utilization of the write profile when the data concerning the performance parameters meet a predetermined criteria. The predetermined criteria may include an excessive overshoot condition.

    • A method and apparatus for writing binary servo data into the servo bursts contained on the storage medium of a storage device. The binary servo information may include track identifying information such as a track number, cylinder number, head number, sector number, index and/or SID. A burst includes T time slots, each slot comprising one cycle of the servo burst frequency, and the servo data to be written comprises X bits of binary data. Each one-bit of the servo data is represented as a slot containing a transition, and each zero-bit is represented as an empty or null slot. In this manner, the present invention provides a highly bit-efficient scheme for representing digital servo data. A high quality PES signal is assured by writing the binary servo information in such a manner as to guarantee a threshold number of transitions per burst as required for accurate peak-hold detection. Data is encoded to provide a constant or substantially constant number of positive transitions per burst to allow accurate integration detection. If the amount of real estate consumed by the servo regions is less critical than the reliability of the binary data, robustness may be enhanced by using dibits rather than single transitions to represent the data.
