    • A system and method for path saturation in a storage area network so that the throughput of the storage area network may be determined. The system and method includes a software utility suite that uses either a system administration scripting language, e.g., Perl or Korn shell, or by compiled or machine language software. The software utility suite includes a set of software tools to be installed on one or more computer systems sharing access to a data storage system, such as a storage area network (SAN). The software tools running on these separate computer systems communicate and collaborate in a peer-to-peer fashion in order to coordinate loading, testing and measurement of storage throughput on the shared data storage system. The software tools further coordinate the collection, storage and presentation of results data obtained through such loading, testing and measurement of the storage throughput of the shared data storage system.

    • A methodology for configuring the connection of adapters to bus controllers or other possibly failing components (PFCs) in a logically partitioned environment. The present invention comprises an Adapter Placement Program (APP), two Adapter Threshold Programs (ATPs), three Sequential Ranking Programs (SRPs), and three Weighting Factor Programs (WFPs). The APP determines the criteria the administrator desires to use to place the adapters on the bus controllers or other PFCs and selects the appropriate program to execute the adapter placement. The ATPs classify the adapters as either “hot” or “not hot” based on a traffic intensity threshold and place the adapters to the bus controllers or other PFCs. The SRPs rank the adapters and place the adapters to the bus controllers or other PFCs based on their rank. The WFPs assign weighting factors to the adapters and place the adapters to bus controllers or other PFCs based on the adapters' weighting factors.

    • A method and implementing instant messaging processing system are provided which include means by which a user is enabled to input certain selective details concerning the user's off-line status. Such user selections are stored by an IM server and subsequently made available to other IM users when such other IM users log-on to the IM application. User selections include a listing of common reasons why a user is not available and means are provided for the user to select specific applicable details concerning the user's off-line status. A user is also enabled to input custom text messages to selectively provide even more specific detail to other users of the IM application concerning the user's off-line status. Means are further provided to enable a user to input more than one custom off-line message and also to indicate the timing of each message and when each message shall be made available to other IM users. A user is also enabled to selectively designate certain individuals to whom access to predetermined messages is made available during the off-line status of the IM user such that access to one off-line message is made available to selected IM participants but not to all IM participants.

    • A method and system for reallocating processors in a logically partitioned environment. The present invention comprises a Performance Enhancement Program (PEP) and a Reallocation Program (RP). The PEP allows an administrator to designate several parameters and identify donor and recipient candidates. The RP compiles the performance data for the processors and calculates a composite parameter. For each processor in the donor candidate pool, the RP compares the composite parameter to the donor load threshold to determine if the processor is a donor. For each processor in the recipient candidate pool, the RP compares the composite parameter to the recipient load threshold to determine if the processor is a recipient. The RP then allocates the processors from the donors to the recipients. The RP continues to monitor and update the workload statistics based on either a moving window or a discrete window sampling system.

    • A computer program product and apparatus for reallocating memory in a logically partitioned environment. The invention comprises a Performance Enhancement Program (PEP) and a Reallocation Program (RP).
