    • A hand-held device includes an audio transducer (i.e., speaker) for delivering acoustic test stimuli to a test subject within the direct sound field range of the device. The device accurately delivers multi-level and multi-frequency test stimuli for the subjective response by the test subject holding the device. An ultrasonic position sensor within the device determines the position of the device with respect to the head or a portion of interest of the head of the test subject while the device is being held. The acoustic test stimuli are controlled and regulated based on the position of the device with respect to the test subject so that accurate levels of test stimuli are presented only when the device is within a proper range and irrespective of its exact position with respect to the test subject's head.

    • A generic canal hearing device is adapted to be positioned deeply and completely within the ear canal, and particularly suited for extended wear. The device includes a removable battery assembly with an outer surface for substantial direct exposure to the environment of the ear canal. The battery assembly is detachably connectable to a microphone section of a universal core assembly, and when connected together, they form a lateral section for positioning comfortably in the cartilaginous part of the canal. The lateral section has an oval cross-sectional perimeter and is substantially cylindrical and elongated along the longitudinal axis of the device corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the ear canal. The microphone section is flexibly coupled to a receiver section of the core assembly which is adapted, with the aid of a surrounding conformable sealing retainer, to be seated medially in the bony portion of the ear canal, and by virtue of the flexible coupling and dimensioning, to allow the lateral section substantial freedom to move in response to canal movement with only incidental contact with the walls of the canal in the cartilaginous part so as to be non-occluding and minimally interfering with hair and debris therein.

    • Examples of systems and methods of wireless control of a canal hearing device by applying a magnetic field on the skin at the temporomandibular region of the head are described. An exemplary hearing device may include one or more magnetic sensors for wireless activation by the magnetic end of a remote control device applied inconspicuously to the anterior of the external ear. The activation of a reed switch magnetic sensor within the canal hearing device may be decoded by the electronics of the hearing device to implement a control command, such as volume change, program setting change, ON, or OFF. According to examples described, wireless control of the canal hearing device may be implemented with a natural, comfortable, and inconspicuous hand-arm motion. In some embodiments, multiple reed switches may be arranged to selectively respond to a magnetic field applied within distinct “hot spot” regions, for separate remote control commands.

    • Embodiments of the invention provide a removal tool for atraumatically removing a hearing device inserted deeply in the ear canal of a user. The removal tool comprises a shaft adapted to be grasp in the hand and a plurality of hooks or other attachment elements coupled to a first end of the shaft. The hooks have a shape and orientation configured to minimize injurious contact with the walls of the ear canal when the removal tool is inserted into the ear canal. The hooks are also configured to detachably engage a loop structure or other attachment system of the hearing device for removal of the device independent of a radial orientation of the shaft with respect to the hearing device. The hooks can also be configured to engage the loop structure in two or more planes for removal of the hearing device. Also, the hooks can be configured to engage the loop structure so as to exert minimal axial force on the hearing device in a medial direction.

    • The invention provides a disposable sensor patch for non-invasive monitoring and recording of infrequent cardiac events. The patch is thin and flexible for comfortable wear on the person's chest for automatic analysis and recording of ECG. The patch is inexpensive and simple for self-administration. The patch incorporates a battery, ECG amplifier, and a processor for analyzing ECG waveform and recording events. A software algorithm searches for a cardiac abnormality. The patch is designed for continuous long-term wear exceeding 3 days for diagnostic monitoring and exceeding 14 days for event detection. In one embodiment a preformatted report is automatically generated by the patch for wireless transmission to a reporting device such as a generic printer or a wireless network system. The patch may also incorporate a marker switch to correlate recorded ECG data with the patient's perception of a cardiac event.
