    • Systems and methods are provided for communicating data over a subscriber loop using a modem. One such method includes: transmitting data on the loop in a first frequency band; sensing an indication that simultaneous transmission on the loop in a POTS frequency band is imminent; and adjusting transmit power in the first band, in response to the sensing step. One such system includes an input/output connection in communication with the loop, a processor operable in at least two states, a means for sensing demand for simultaneous usage of the loop, and a means for controlling the state. The first state is characterized by a first transmit power spectrum in the first band. The second state is characterized by a second transmit power spectrum in the first band, reduced relative to the first spectrum. Upon sensing demand, the control means causes the processor to operate in the second state.

    • The present invention provides for a system and method for blocking leakage signals and uncoupling connections in a communication system. A leakage signal (LS) blocking splitter employs a high-pass filter which effectively blocks the lower frequency leakage signal. The high-pass filter (an LS filter) has a cut-off frequency selected to fall between the upper range of the leakage signal (which is approximately 4 KHz in the preferred embodiment) and the low-end frequency of a data signal. A detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to which each one of the leakage signal (LS) filters are coupled to. The detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to ensure that each LS blocking splitter is coupled to an in-service communication connection. If the communication connection becomes out-of-service, such as when a customer discontinues service with the service provider, the detect and terminate functions automatically uncouple the respective LS filter from the communication connections so that the LS filter cannot introduce undesirable harmonics into the communication system. In an alternative embodiment, the detect and terminate function may insert an impedance matching element in addition to uncoupling the LS filter.

    • A communication system includes a master transceiver in communication with one or more transceivers, for example, a first tributary transceiver and a second tributary transceiver over a communication medium. The first tributary transceiver uses a primary modulation method for communication while the second tributary transceiver uses a secondary or embedded modulation method for communication. The master transceiver and tributary transceivers each include a processor, memory, and control logic for controlling their operation. While the primary modulation method is normally used for transmissions on the communication medium, the master transceiver can communicate with the second tributary transceiver by notifying the first tributary transceiver that the primary modulation method is being temporarily replaced by the secondary or embedded modulation method. The master transceiver can then exchange information with the second tributary transceiver while the first tributary transceiver ignores any secondary modulation transmissions. In the meantime, the first tributary transceiver conditions itself to look for a trailing sequence from the master transceiver indicating that communication with the second tributary transceiver is complete. When the master transceiver transmits the trailing sequence using the primary modulation method, the first tributary transceiver conditions itself to look for primary modulation transmissions while the second tributary transceiver conditions itself to ignore primary modulation transmissions.

The local loop interceder establishes a first signal pathway from the local loop to the PSTN and a second signal pathway from the local loop to a high speed data modem. The local loop interceder alternates between the first and second pathways depending upon whether the end user desires voice or data communication on the local loop. In a second embodiment, the high speed data modem is a simultaneous voice and data (SVD) modem. In such case, the local loop interceder provides a third signal pathway from the SVD modem to the PSTN for voice communication which is demodulated from a simultaneous voice and data signal received by the SVD modem through the second signal pathway.

Three individual relatively low BPS data rate transmitters have their outputs connected to different weighting multipliers. The input to the individual transmitters comprises a binary data input, the bits of which have been steered to individual ones of low BPS data rate transmitters. The composite output of the summer generates a signal space sufficient for 14,400 BPS transmission utilizing 4800 BPS transmitters.
