    • An encoding method for a frame synchronization signal includes: encoding a predetermined intermediate variable corresponding to a cell ID or cell group ID to obtain short codes corresponding to the cell ID or cell group ID; and generating SCH codewords according to the said short codes, instead of directly encoding the cell ID or cell group ID, thereby ensuring that a first short code in each generated S-SCH codeword is larger than a second short code, or a first short code in each generated S-SCH codeword is smaller than a second short code, and a short code distance thereof is relatively small, so as to enhance the reliability of the frame synchronization. An encoding apparatus for a frame synchronization signal is further provided.

    • A method is provided for arranging transmissions on a downlink carrier c, spanning a frequency range Fc, in a mobile radio communications system, wherein a bandwidth of Fc belongs to a set of predefined channel bandwidths in the communications system, and wherein the carrier c comprises a reference signal defined in the communications system. A configurable frequency range FRS comprising a set of time-frequency resources for comprising the reference signal of the carrier c is provided. Information associated with the configuration of said frequency range FRS is signaled to a receiver in the communications system, such that c can be deployed over a frequency range F smaller than Fc when the frequency range FRS is configured within F and any other transmissions on the carrier c are arranged to be within F.

    • An improved generation and use of Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) generates a PRS to be used in a wireless Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication system. A time-frequency pattern of Resource Elements (REs) is determined and used for transmitting the PRS, wherein the time-frequency pattern includes at least two OFDM symbols. Each one of the at least two OFDM symbols is assigned a value to each one of a number of the REs being within that OFDM symbol. The values being assigned to the number of REs correspond to elements in a modulation sequence having a length being equal to the number of REs, and are to be used for modulating OFDM subcarriers corresponding to the REs within that OFDM symbol.
