    • A processor is provided with first and second document images. The first image represents an instance of a reference document to which instance a mark has been added. The second image is selected from among a collection of document images and represents the reference document without the mark. The processor automatically extracts from the first document image a set of pixels representing the mark. This is done by performing a reference-based mark extraction technique in which the second document image serves as a reference image and in which substantially the entirety of the first document image is compared with substantially the entirety of the second document image. Also, the processor is provided with information about a set of active elements of the reference document. The reference document has at least one such active element and each active element is associated with at least one action. The processor interprets the extracted set of pixels representing the mark by determining whether the mark indicates any of the active elements of the reference document. If the mark indicates an active element, the processor facilitates the action with which the indicated active element is associated.

    • A method and system provide for searching and matching gesture-based data such as handwriting without performing a recognition process on the handwritten gesture data to convert it to a standard computer-coded form. Target data collected as sample data points of spatial coordinates over time are concatenated into a single target gesture sequence of sample data points. The sample data points comprising the gesture-based data structure to be searched (the corpus) are grouped into corpus gesture sequences for matching against the target gesture sequence. Matching may be done by any suitable method, and a novel signal comparison technique based on dynamic time warping concepts is illustrated. The result of the matching is a list of the locations of the matching corpus gesture sequences in the corpus, which in turn may be used for further processing, such as the display of an image of the matching corpus gestures for a system user. The ability to determine the existence and location of a gesture in the corpus that matches a target gesture is the basis for performing a variety of additional functions, such as a "find and replace" function and the ability to use gestures as keywords to index a gesture-based data structure without performing recognition on either the keyword gestures or the gesture-based data structure. The technique is suitable for inclusion in any system that accepts gesture-based data, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or other pen-based computing device.

    • Binary digital data is rendered on a surface, such as a sheet of paper, by printing a series of color patches on the sheet, with the 1 bits rendered as color patches of a first color and the 0 bits rendered as color patches of the second color. The color patches are arranged in a predetermined order along an axis on the surface. The second color relates to the first color by a fixed relationship in color space, whereby the absolute values of the first and second colors are immaterial to a detecting apparatus. The color patches can be intermixed with areas of a third color, the third color representing an average in color space of the first color and the second color.

    • This technique for determining an optimal color space direction for a respective input color mathematically models the determination of the color space direction as an optimization problem and uses models of human perception and scanner response that produce quantitative measurements of color changes. A given input color and a direction in color space away from the givien input color define a color change away from the input color. An objective function simultaneously minimizes the quantitative color difference of the color change measured by a human perception model and maximizes the color response difference of a scanner response model to find an optimal color space direction for the respective input color.
