    • A broad band energy harvesting system to harvest energy from a structure and associated methods are provided. The system includes a structure carrying a plurality of environmentally produced vibration frequencies extending over a frequency range and an energy harvesting apparatus positioned in vibration receiving communication with the structure to harvest energy from the structure. Each energy harvesting apparatus includes broadly tuned energy harvesting generators having relatively low quality factor and corresponding relatively wide bandwidth. The energy harvesting generators collectively provide energy harvesting over multiple modes to thereby provide energy harvesting over a substantial portion of the frequency range. Each energy harvesting generator can include a cantilevered beam connected to a common backbone comprised of a resilient material configured to transfer energy between adjacent generators to further enhance energy harvesting.

    • A system to monitor the health of the structure, program product, and associated methods are provided. The system can include multiple health monitoring sensor nodes positioned to monitor parameters of a portion of the body of the structure. Sensor elements of the sensor nodes are spatially positioned along the body of structure at related or complementary locations to form a special correlative relationship between sensor nodes. The system can also include a data collector having a transceiver positioned to gather sensed parameter data from each of the sensor nodes, and a central computer including in memory, parameter process program product adapted to analyze the sensed parameter data, correlate the sensed parameter data to infer a state of health of the structure responsive to the correlation, and to detect or otherwise determine a type, severity, and/or location of damage to or incipient failure of the structure.

    • A computed tomography system employs an optical communications link to reliably transmit high bandwidth data from the gantry to the associated processor. The communications link comprises an optical emitter, an optical waveguide, an induced radiated wave chamber, and an optical detector. The optical emitter is attached to the gantry of the computed tomography system. The optical waveguide generates a total internal reflection breach in response to an electric field, light energy, magnetic energy, and alternatively, in response to heat produced within a induced radiated wave chamber. The optical emitter generates a high bandwidth optical data signal which travels along the optical waveguide in correspondence with data generated by the detector array on the gantry. An induced radiated wave chamber induces a breach in the total internal reflection condition in the portion of the waveguide disposed within the induced radiated wave chamber, to cause the high bandwidth optical data signal to be reflected from the waveguide within the induced radiated wave chamber and correspondingly not to be reflected outside the waveguide. The optical detector which is fixed to the induced radiated wave chamber detects data reflected from the optical data signal.
