    • An application activation method includes interfacing a vehicle computing system with a remote device using an interface protocol. The method also includes sending a query from the vehicle computing system to the remote device to determine applications and/or services available on the remote device that are capable of interaction with the vehicle computing system. Once the applications have been determined, the method includes selecting, at the vehicle computing system, an application or service from the determined available applications and/or services for interaction. The method also includes sending an instruction from the vehicle computing system to an agent on the remote device, the instruction including an indication that the selected application or service is to be activated. Finally, the method includes receiving confirmation, at the vehicle computing system, that the application or service has been activated.

    • A route-determination method includes gathering road-related data in a vehicle navigation system (VNS) for a plurality of routes between two locations. This may include weighting two or more of the possible routes in the VNS based at least on the road-related data. Also, this may include adjusting the weighting in the VNS for each weighted route based on projected fuel consumption and determining an optimal fuel usage route in the VNS based on the adjusted weighting. Further, this may include outputting at least one optimal fuel usage route.

    • A packetization method includes preparing data comprising driving instructions for delivery to a vehicle. The illustrative method also includes determining a portion of the data to deliver in a first packet to a vehicle computing system in communication with a server executing the method, based at least in part on when the first packet, containing at least a first driver action instruction, is needed in the vehicle. The method further includes adding the determined portion of data to the packet and delivering the first packet of data to a vehicle computing system in communication with the server. Finally, the method includes repeating the steps of determining, adding and delivering, until no data remains for delivery, such that packets arrive at a vehicle and are processed for output prior to a first driver action instruction of each packet being needed in the vehicle, the repetition contingent on data remaining for delivery.

    • A user interface system and method for a vehicle enables access to services available through an electronic device. The user interface system includes a networking gateway configured to receive a first data set from the electronic device. A service engine is included, which is operable with the networking gateway. The service engine is configured to process the first data set and output a second data set that corresponds to the services. A data transformation agent receives the second data set and generates a third data set, wherein the third data set is in a predetermined format. A user interface module is included that is configured to communicate with the data transformation agent. The user interface module receives the third data set having the predetermined format and the user interface module provides an interface for the user to access the services available through the electronic device.

    • A user interface system and method for a vehicle enables access to an electronic device. The electronic device is configured to transmit a first data set wherein the first data set indicates at least one of appearance and a function requirement. A user interface module is included having a second data set and a display unit configured to electronically display information that is assessable via the electronic device. Additionally, a conversion engine communicates with the user interface module and the electronic device and processes the first data set and the second data set. Based on the first and second data set, a third data set is generated that is loaded into the user interface module. Through the use of the third data set, the user information system provides access to the electronic device.
