    • A correlation meter is disclosed for determining tuning status of a tunable receiver. The correlation meter receives an output of the tunable receiver, such as an acoustic audio output of the tunable receiver. An analog to digital converter converts the output of the tunable receiver to a digital sample side representation. An antenna or other signal collector receives reference side representations corresponding to channels to which the tunable receiver may be tuned. The correlation meter correlates the digital sample side representation and the reference side representations as the reference side representations are received by the correlation meter in order to determine the tuning status of the tunable receiver.

    • Method and apparatus for identifying a number of people in a monitored area wherein a first reflected ultrasonic wave map of the monitored area is collected that includes background objects. A second reflected ultrasonic wave map of the monitored area is collected when people may be present in the monitored area. The first collected background defining map is subtracted from the second collected map to obtain a resulting map. The resulting map is processed to identify clusters having a minimum intensity. A cluster size of the thus identified clusters is utilized to identify clusters corresponding to people. The ultrasonic detecting method and apparatus is utilized with a wave signal receiver for identifying an audience composition of the receiver and determining the viewing habits of the public.

    • Methods and apparatus for identifying a digital audio signal are described. An example apparatus for identifying a digital audio signal includes an input to receive the digital audio signal, which includes data from a broadcast or a stored digital program signal. The example apparatus also includes a detector to receive the digital audio signal from the input and determine whether the received digital audio signal is uncompressed as received at the input; a decoder to receive the digital audio signal from the detector when the digital audio signal is compressed as received at the input and identify any first program-identifying code in an auxiliary field of the compressed digital audio signal; and a code reader to receive the digital audio signal from the detector when the digital audio signal is uncompressed as received at the input and receive the digital audio signal from a decompressor when the digital audio signal is compressed as received at the input. Additionally, the code reader is to identify any second program-identifying code in a decompressed or uncompressed portion of the digital audio signal when the first program-identifying code is not identified in the auxiliary field or when the digital audio signal is uncompressed as received at the input.

    • Apparatus, methods and articles of manufacture for determining an operating mode of a recording/playing device are disclosed. An example apparatus includes an extractor to extract signatures associated with a first signal associated with a tuner that is to tune to a program signal, a second signal associated with a recording/playing device that is to at least one of record and play a program, and a third signal associated with a receiver coupled to the recording/playing device. The example apparatus also includes a recording detector to detect a recording signal generated by the recording/playing device during recording of the program to form a recorded program. Also included is a correlator to correlate the first, second, and third signals and a processor to identify the operating mode of the recording/playing device based on detection of the recording signal and correlation of two or more of the first, second, and third signals.
