    • A connection system for facilitating connections with an apparatus for handling medical fluids, such as blood, to adapt the apparatus for one or more particular uses. The system includes one or more connector blocks having an access opening and at least one connection device, such as a fitting for mounting medical grade tubing, in fluid communication with the access opening, and a seal tray for slidably mounting a connector block and initialy sealing the access opening in the connector block. A track and a part are provided on the apparatus, with the track being adapted to slidably mount the connector block on the apparatus such that the access opening of the block can be moved into and out of alignment with the port. The seal tray and the track are so configured that the seal tray can be aligned with the track to allow the connector block to be moved at least partially off of the sealing tray onto the track, thereby to bring the connector block's access openings into alignment with the port.

    • A blood handling system has a first blood handling apparatus mounted on a second blood handling apparatus with a mounting apparatus. The mounting apparatus has two primary components: a retention sleeve attached to a stem that protrudes from the lower portion of the first blood handling apparatus; and a slotted plate that is attached to a stem on the second blood handling apparatus. The retention sleeve has a track for receiving the slotted plate and a flexible tab, with a protruding tooth, that securely engages the slotted plate in a locked position. If it becomes necessary to disconnect the first blood handling apparatus from the second blood handling apparatus during surgery, the tab may be easily moved into an unlocked position, allowing the disk to slide freely out of the track so that the units can be easily separated from each other.

    • A modular blood treatment system with a blood treatment cartridge having a blood treatment media receiving opening defining an entrance of a first chamber. The first chamber defines a first interior space and a second interior space. At least one cardiotomy blood sucker port is in fluid communication with the first interior space via a cardiotomy manifold. The cardiotomy manifold preferably defines a downward curving surface from the at least one cardiotomy blood sucker port to the first interior space having a radius of about 2.54 to 7.62 cm. A venous blood inlet is in fluid communication with a second interior space within the interior space. A first blood treatment media is interposed between the first interior space and the second interior space. A second blood treatment media is interposed between the second interior space and the blood treatment media receiving opening. A blood storage section has an outlet port extends substantially across the blood treatment media receiving opening. In one embodiment, at least one blood diverter is located in the blood storage section to form two funnel-shaped blood flow channels between the blood treatment media opening and the outlet port. The funnel-shaped blood flow channels preferably define a first downward flow axis at an angle of about 20 to 24 degrees with respect to horizontal. The funnel-shaped blood flow channels preferably define a second downward flow axis at an angle from horizontal of about 3 to 7 degrees laterally from the first downward flow axis.

    • A blood reservoir adapted for use in an extracorporeal circulatory support circuit. The blood reservoir includes a visible inlet tube that extends vertically outside the housing of the reservoir to allow visual observation of venous blood flowing in the inlet tube. The inlet tube is releasably held generally adjacent the top of the housing to allow the reservoir to be converted between top and bottom mounted venous blood inlets with a single inlet, as well as permitting the inlet tube to be moved to a position extending downwardly from the reservoir to allow draining the reservoir through the inlet tube after surgery. A generally funnel-shaped inlet portion may be provided in the inlet adjacent the chamber to decelerate blood before it enters the chamber, and a diverter cone may be provided over a venous inlet portion to divert the incoming blood.

    • An apparatus for handling a patient's blood during a medical procedure which is convertible for use after the procedure for at least one further use. The apparatus comprises a reservoir having a port comprising at least one opening. A primary device, alignable with the port for adapting the reservoir for use during the procedure. The apparatus further comprises one or more secondary devices each alignable with the port means for adapting the reservoir for one or more further uses after the procedure. The primary device and the secondary devices are slidably mounted on the apparatus between tracks, with the primary device initially aligned with the port to allow the reservoir to be used during the medical procedure. The tracks allow the primary device to be moved out of alignment with the port and allow at least one of the secondary devices to be moved into alignment with the port so that the reservoir can be used after the medical procedure.

    • Apparatus for producing flexible kink resistant tubing having one or more non-reinforced section(s) and one or more spirally-reinforced section(s). The apparatus includes a rotatable member having an extrusion passgeway for extruding a second thermoplastic material in a filament within a first thermoplastic material to form a reinforcing filament in tubing formed by the first thermoplastic material. The rotatable member is rotated at a predetermined velocity to form the reinforcing filament in a spiral or helical pattern in the wall of the tubing. A diverter valve is provided for selectively providing the second thermoplastic material so that filament reinforced and non-reinforced longitudinal sections of tubing may be formed without interruption. A method of producing such kink resistant tubing is also disclosed.
