    • A system and method for providing email using a flexible routing technique based on MX records. The method includes the steps of creating an MX record for a user, the MX record identifying a storage location for the user within the system; and routing mail within the enterprise email system using the information contained in the MX record. A system may include an inbound mail transfer agent coupled to an external network and an internal network; user email data storage having an address within the internal network; a user location database server containing a unique user token identifying a storage location for user email data in the user email data storage; and an internal DNS server including MX records for storage domains on the internal network.

    • A system for key management and securing communications channels is presented for the upgrade of compact electronic devices via a communications channel by service providers such as the original manufacturer and, possibly, a number of authorized third party service providers. The manufacturer, acting as a trusted authority, generates and distributes private cryptographic keys to each one of the clients and authorized service providers. The trusted authority also makes available public key values that may be used to secure communications between service providers and clients. The trusted authority may add additional authorized service providers and may also revoke the authorization of compromised service providers, thereby preventing communications between clients and said compromised service providers. Accordingly, authorized service providers, in addition to the manufacturer, may provide program and security upgrades, messages, and generally any data to electronic devices via a secure communications link.

    • The Routing Information Protocol [RIP] is extended to include a network-wide unique interface identifier [UID] that allows the zeroconfiguration multiple router [R1, R2] network to detect subnet conflicts. Detected conflicts are automatically repaired by the respective routers assigning and advertising new subnet mappings. The extended, Zeroconfiguration Routing Information Protocol [ZRIP] employs a NORMAL/CHANGE status flag associated with each routing table entry to resolve ambiguity between normal routing advertisements and conflict notifications. Address re-mapping and name-to-address resolution is provided to support both network address translation [NAT] and virtualized address paradigms.
