    • The assembly of this invention comprises an elastic plug that is retained in a medical device, such as a catheter. A needle having a distal portion and a proximal portion resides in the elastic plug. The proximal portion has a different cross-section than the distal portion. In one embodiment, the cross-section of the proximal portion is smaller than the distal portion. Upon removal of the needle from the catheter and the elastic plug, the space in the elastic plug that had been occupied by the proximal portion of the needle is closed to effectively achieve the sealing function of the plug. The needle may include one or more notches in fluid communication with the needle lumen. One notch is preferably located at the juncture between the proximal portion and the distal portion of the needle to facilitate the blood flow between the needle and the catheter for better visualization of blood flashback by the clinician.

    • A winged catheter introducer is disclosed. The catheter introducer has a catheter, a robe attached to the catheter and a winged intermediate member between the catheter and the robe. Within the catheter and the robe is a needle with a stylet attached to it. The stylet is attached to a hub which facilitates the pulling of the needle out of the catheter and through the robe. Attached to the robe is an adapter with a septum attached to it. The needle is provided with an opening extending from the needle wall to the needle lumen. A shielding device is provided which is attached to the adapter. The shielding device includes a needle container which is designed to trap the needle. A needle shield is provided inside the needle container. The needle is provided with an area of enlarged diameter. This area of enlarged diameter interacts with the needle shield when the needle is withdrawn from the catheter and robe and into the needle container. The needle shield is provided with an orifice through which the needle and stylet can fit but through which the area of enlarged diameter cannot pass. When the needle is withdrawn from the catheter and tube and into the needle container, it is trapped by the needle shield. The needle shield is also provided with a transverse wall which snaps over the point of the needle.

    • A catheter and introducer needle assembly is provided wherein the catheter includes a side port and a plug located in the catheter hub, the needle is notched and is securely mounted to a shield housing with a plurality of telescoped tubes concentrically surrounding the needle. One of the telescoped tubes is securely connected to the shield housing. The other tubes in the assembly may be slid with respect to one another and distally away from the shield housing. The tubes have combined lengths to enable complete shielding of the needle when the tubes are telescopingly extended. The tubes include interlocking mechanisms to prevent separation of the tubes and to prevent collapse of the tubes once they have been fully extended. The distal-most tube, when the tubes are telescopingly extended, engages a catheter hub to prevent withdrawal of the needle from the shield assembly until the tubes are fully telescopingly extended. After the needle is fully shielded, the shielded needle is separated from the catheter hub.

    • A winged IV catheter assembly includes a central tube having a proximal end and a distal end secured to a catheter. The outer circumference of the central tube has at least one annular bead. The assembly also includes a winged inserter having a longitudinally extending body and a pair of flexible wings connected to the body. The body includes a central passageway. The passageway includes at least one annular groove for receiving the annular bead on the central tube. The central tube and catheter can be rotatably positioned within the passageway of the winged inserter. The central tube and catheter then can be rotated with respect to the winged inserter as needed by a health care worker to facilitate insertion of the catheter into a patient.
