The system includes a score generator coupled to a recommendation generator. In one preferred embodiment, the recommendation generator includes an inference engine, and in another preferred embodiment, the recommendation generator includes a pre-requisite analyzer. Both the pre-requisite analyzer and the inference engine in the recommendation generator can generate recommendations based on the student's test results. The recommendation generator is coupled to a report generator and a question generator. The report generator accesses a report format. Based on the recommendations and the report format, the report generator generates a report, which can provide assessment of the student's understanding in different areas of the subject, and which can provide action items to improve on the student's understanding in the subject. The question generator, based on the recommendations, generates a number of questions. The student can take this new set of questions to further enhance her understanding in the subject.

The subject is divided into line-items and relationship-items, with each relationship-item relating two or more items. The items are separated into learnt and un-learnt elements. The invention includes the steps of (1) selecting an un-learnt element; (2) generating learning materials for the student to learn the selected element; and (3) assessing the student's learning progress in the selected element. If the assessment on the selected element is satisfactory, then the invention (1) classifies one or more relationship-items to be learnt as un-learnt elements, with each classified relationship-item relating the selected element with one or more learnt elements; and (2) re-classifies the selected element as a learnt-element. Then the invention repeats from the step of selecting an un-learnt element. The steps can repeat until all the un-learnt elements have been learnt, and at that point, the student has mastered the subject.

Not only does the apparatus provide the user the freedom as to where and when to learn, and the guidance as to what to learn, the apparatus also reduces a significant hurdle to learning—money. The apparatus retrieves a user identifier entered by the user, and determines whether the user is a learning user or an institute user. If the user is a learning user, the apparatus allows the user to access information regarding learning materials. If the user is an institute user, the apparatus permits the user to access information regarding at least one learning user. The institute user might be interested to use the apparatus to recruit employees to fill job openings. A learning user pays significantly less than an institute user to access information, so as to encourage the learning user to work on learning materials. The apparatus can also track and update information regarding the users.

In one approach, first, the context or the domain of the document is determined. Then, domain-specific phrases in the document are automatically extracted based on grammar and dictionaries. From these phrases, categories in a category hierarchy are identified, and the document is linked to those categories. Phrases in the document that cannot be categorized are identified to be analyzed. If these new phrases are relevant, new categories may be created based on suggestions provided to categorize them. Later when a user asks a question that is related to the categorized phrases, the corresponding categories are identified, with the document retrieved to respond to the question. In one approach, the question is in natural-language.

The registry can also access a summarized profile of the existing users to help the potential user make joining decisions. The system can also include a notepad for a user to take notes. The interaction controller can also guide the user to take notes.
