    • The spinal rod system and perpendicular rod connector of the invention provides for a first rod to be connected by two pedicle screws transverse to the spine across a vertebra. The perpendicular connector is then connected to the first rod anywhere along the rod. The longitudinal spinal rod is then connected to the perpendicular rod connector using common connectors. The perpendicular connector is slidable along the first rod. By using the perpendicular rod connector, the amount of bending and the tolerances required is reduced as the connector may be slid along the transverse rod to accommodate the longitudinal rod. Known pedicle screws may be used with a slight bend placed in the transverse rod to accommodate the spinal column. Alternatively, the pedicle screws may be bent slightly such that a straight transverse rod may be used. By using the perpendicular rod connector and transverse rod arrangement, the amount of bending required on the longitudinal rod may be reduced to thereby shorten the entire procedure.

    • The present invention relates to a locking sleeve assembly for use in a posterior spinal system including components designed to be affixed to the spinal column of a person to correct for various lateral and sagittal deformities. The locking sleeve assembly is for interconnecting an elongated rod with another structure. The locking sleeve assembly includes an elongated sleeve having a bore therethrough. The sleeve has a tapered first end and a second end having a lock member thereon. The sleeve includes at least one split extending into the sleeve. The bore is sized to slidably receive the rod. The tapered surface of the sleeve is insertable into a tapered passage of the other structure with the rod in the bore, to form an interference fit between the two tapered surfaces. The locking sleeve assemblies are used in conjunction with the spinal system which also includes a pair of smooth surfaced rods mounted in spaced relation to one another on the spinal column in conjunction with various fixation devices such as clamps with hook bodies, hooks, screws with hook bodies, and couplers. Each such fixation device utilizes locking sleeve assemblies at each connection point to secure the respective fixation device to the respective rod or rods. The coupler assemblies are provided to maintain the spacing of the rods. The method of performing surgery using the posterior spinal system is also disclosed.

The clamp assembly includes inferior and superior clamp halves slidably interconnected with one another. Each clamp half has a body portion and a shoe connected to the body portion. Each clamp half has a stud connected to the body portion. The studs are connectable to other members incorporated in this spinal system for fixing the position of the clamp halves with respect to each other. The clamps are used in conjunction with the spinal system which also includes a pair of smooth surfaced rods mounted in spaced relation to one another on the spinal column in conjunction with various fixation devices such as the clamps with hook bodies, hooks, screws with hook bodies and couplers. Each such fixation device utilizes locking sleeve assemblies at each connection point to secure the respective fixation device to the respective rod or rods. The coupler assemblies are provided to maintain the spacing of the rods. The method of performing surgery using the posterior spinal system is also disclosed.

    • A sagittal approximator for clamping engagement with an open back hook for urging a spinal rod into seating engagement with said hook. The sagittal approximator includes an integral fixed handle and jaw. A shiftable handle is pivotally connected to the fixed handle. A shiftable jaw is pivotally connected to the fixed handle adjacent the fixed jaw. The pivotal handle and jaw are pivotally interconnected such that as the pivotal handle is shifted, the pivotal jaw shifts accordingly. The fixed handle includes a threaded channel and longitudinal guide rib. A spinal rod engagement head is slidably carried by the fixed handle and jaw and includes a spinal rod seat which with contact with the spinal rod produces a balanced seating load on the rod. A threaded pusher rod is carried by the channel which when rotated longitudinally shifts the head relative to the fixed handle.
