    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate determining when and whether to implement a sender-based data packet scheduling mechanism or a receiver-based data packet scheduling mechanism based on one or mode scheduling factors. For example, a sending node and a receiving node may communicate to permit a determination of which node is more capable of performing the scheduling tasks, and a corresponding scheduling technique may be selected and executed. According to an aspect, an amount of data downloading may be compared to an amount of data uploading at each node, and a sender-based scheduling protocol may be performed when the amount of data uploading is greater than the amount of downloading data.

    • In an environment where the transmission medium leading to the receiver is time-variant within a block of received signals, and where transmission medium has an finite impulse response extending over a number of symbols intervals, a receiver that includes a filter that, based on an estimate of the transmission channel, is controlled to have filter coefficients that minimize inter-carrier interference due to the intra-block time variations in the transmission medium. The estimate channel coefficients are determined from pilot signals and an interpolation process. When the receiver is an OFDM receiver, the pilot signals are advantageously selected to be in clusters that are equally spaced from each other in the time or the frequency domains. This approach applies to multiple antenna, as well as to single antenna arrangements, and to arrangements that do, or do not use space-time coding.

    • Techniques for scheduling UEs are described. In one design, a scheduler (e.g., for a cell) may receive channel direction information (CDI) and channel strength information (CSI) from a plurality of UEs. In one design, the CDI from each UE may include at least one eigenvector, and the CSI from each UE may include at least one singular value corresponding to the at least one eigenvector. The scheduler may schedule at least one UE among the plurality of UEs for data transmission based on the CDI and CSI from the plurality of UEs. The scheduler may select the at least one UE based on a metric related to signal-to-leakage ratio (SLR), or spectral efficiency, etc. In one design, the scheduler may evaluate the performance of different sets of UEs to determine whether to schedule one UE for single-user MIMO or multiple UEs for multi-user MIMO.
