    • The present invention provides an optical waveguide modulator. In one embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor planar optical waveguide core and doped semiconductor connecting paths located adjacent opposite sides of the core and capable of applying a voltage across the core. The optical waveguide core and connecting paths form a structure having back-to-back PN semiconductor junctions. In another embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor optical waveguide core including a ridge portion wherein the ridge portion has at least one PN semiconductor junction located therein. The optical waveguide modulator also includes one or more doped semiconductor connecting paths located laterally adjacent the ridge portion and capable of applying a voltage to the ridge portion.

    • An apparatus and method for automated calibration of an optical device are disclosed. The apparatus is an integrated optoelectronic system that includes input and output optical waveguides, a tunable optical device, an optical source, an optical detector, and an electronic controller formed on a single substrate. The tunable optical device has one or more tuning elements for varying one or more characteristics of the device. The optical source is coupled to the input waveguide for providing a calibration signal to the device. The optical detector is coupled to the output optical waveguide for measuring an intensity of the optical signal output by the device in response to receiving the calibration signal. The electronic controller is configured to perform a calibration of the device by varying a parameter of each tuning element and to receive intensity measurements of the optical signal output by the device as a function of the varied parameter.

    • A system and method for automatic generation of parallelizable application units is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes executing application binaries and dependencies having a hooked application method on a computer node of a cluster of a network, receiving a context of the hooked application method from a client of the network upon reaching a hook of the hooked application method during execution of the application binaries and the dependencies, executing the context of the hooked application method on the computer node, and generating results of the hooked application method on the computer node. The method may further include serializing the results on the computer node, and transmitting, via the network, the serialized results to the client. In addition, the method may include executing two or more hooked application methods in parallel.

    • The invention relates to an improved keyboard and keyboard driver for facilitating a reduction in the number of key presses required to create or delete a given data string (i.e. mnemonics, abbreviations, words, sentences, paragraphs etc.). The keyboard includes an array of keys having multi-character indicia and an interface system comprising data storage means; data processing means; and data display means, wherein the data processing means reduces key presses by filtering data stored within the data storage means by initial character, as determined by the character or characters ascribed to a data input key initially pressed by a user, and prioritizing the filtered data in real-time according to user-configurable prioritization parameters (using qualitative and/or quantitative information relating to each data string stored within the storage means). The invention also provides improved calculator functionality and function-lock keys. Taken together, the keyboard and keyboard driver of the invention (which may be implemented in isolation or together) promotes ease of use, reduced user-interactivity, elevated efficiency and thus enhanced productivity that in turn yields improved accuracy and flexibility.
