    • An image printing apparatus is capable of printing an image at various resolutions, such as 300- and 360-dpi systems. To drive a printhead at a printing position corresponding to the resolution of printing data, information on whether to discharge ink separately in the forward and return passes of the printhead is stored in the storage area of a RAM in advance in correspondence with the main scanning position of the printhead. Data (0 or 1) stored in the RAM is read out by using, as a RAM address input, a count value output from a printhead position detection unit that represents the current position of the printhead. Only when the readout data is 1, a printing position pulse is generated to print an image at an arbitrary resolution. By setting ink discharge positions separately in the forward and return passes, an image can be printed at a high precision.

    • This invention discloses a printing apparatus and printing method for shortening the print data transfer time in thinning and driving nozzles in high-speed printing, multipass printing, or the like. In thinning and driving nozzle blocks, a printer main body transmits data representing a print mode, and print data corresponding to nozzles to be used. In a printhead, a shift clock generator generates a shift clock shortened in period in accordance with the thinning ratio, and a shift register stores the print data in correspondence with the clock. Print data corresponding to the printing elements to be used are repetitively stored in areas corresponding to printing elements not to be used.

    • A method for refilling liquid using a refilling container is to refill liquid to a liquid reserving container, which is provided with a first chamber that houses a negative pressure generating member, at the same time, having an aperture conductively connected to the outside, and with a second chamber conductively connected with the first chamber through a communicating unit for forming essentially a closed space with the exception of the communicating unit. This method comprises the step of forming an essentially closed space from the atmospheric air by means of the second chamber and the refilling container with the exception of the communicating unit in a state where the liquid surface of the refilling container is positioned higher than the liquid surface of the second chamber, and the step of arranging the second chamber to be conductively connected with the refilling container by use of a first path that enables gas in the second chamber to communicate with gas in the refilling container, and a second path, which is different from the first path, arranged for shifting liquid in the refilling container into the second chamber. With the method thus arranged, liquid in the liquid refilling container is refilled into the liquid reserving chamber quickly and stably without leakage from the aperture arranged for the first chamber.
