    • A throw-away tipped drill has an insert removably connected to a shank for cutting a workpiece. The insert (31) and the shank (32) have mutually engaging surfaces respectively, and a slit (34, 39) is formed either in the insert (31) or in the shank (32) for mounting the insert to the shank, whereby the insert (31) is fixed to the shank (32) by an elastic force which is caused by an elastic deformation upon mutual movement of opposite surfaces of this slit (34, 39) in engagement of the insert (31) and the shank (32). Therefore, the insert (31) and the shank (32) are coupled by simple press fitting without any requirement for a screw or other connection, whereby the assembly is improved. The cutting edge of the insert (31) has an excellent wear resistance, adhesion resistance and thermal cracking resistance and the shank (32) has an excellent toughness while the drill is relatively low in costs, by employing surface-coated cemented carbide as the material for the insert while employing steel as the material for the shank.

    • A control system for the choke valve of a caburetor employs a bimetal element heated by an electric resistance heater when the engine is running to move the choke valve toward open position. A vacuum actuator is connected to move the choke valve toward open position when manifold vacuum pressure develops upon starting of the engine. Linkage connects the throttle valve to an unloader device which insures that the choke valve is held open when the throttle valve is opened beyond a predetermined limit. A temperature responsive device subjected to a flow of engine coolant or lubricant operates a fast idle device which holds the throttle valve at fast idle position and allows it to return to slow idle position only when the engine coolant or lubricant has been heated to a sufficient extent. The fast idle device is connected through linkage to prevent closing movement of the choke valve in the event that the engine is stopped in hot condition, thereby facilitating re-starting of the engine while hot.

    • An automatic choke valve apparatus for an internal combustion engine comprising a choke valve mounted in an intake passage of an internal combustion engine and having an operation shaft connected to a driving shaft of an external pulse motor through an intermediate torsion spring and through circumferentially disposed front and rear pawls such that drive rotation from the motor can be effected only in the regular direction of rotation thereof. A driving pulse circuit is connected to the pulse motor to drive the same between first through fourth sequential operation conditions by respective detecting of the closure of an engine ignition switch, closure of an engine starter switch, beginning of complete firing of the engine, and continuing of the complete firing. The motor is driven in reverse direction of rotation in the first operation condition and in sequential regular direction of rotation in the second to forth operation conditions. In the first operation condition the motor is driven in predetermined high speed reverse direction of rotation, whereas in the second operation condition, it is driven in the regular direction of rotation for a predetermined constant time interval at a speed corresponding to engine temperature, whereas in the third operation condition, it is driven in regular direction of rotation at a predetermined high speed for a constant time interval, while in the fourth operation condition it is driven in the regular direction of rotation at a speed corresponding to engine temperature.
