    • A network interface controller (NIC) in a computer device may provide host-independent secondary processing servicing. The secondary processing servicing may be provided by the NIC independent of networking operations performed by NIC, and may comprise performing applications and/or services typically performed in the computer device. The secondary processing servicing may be provided, and/or be activated when an operating system (OS), a virtual machine (VM), a service, and/or an application running in the computer device becomes unavailable, due to transitions to non-active and/or low-power or power saving states. In instances where the computer device is configured as a virtualized platform, comprising a plurality of VMs, the secondary processing servicing may be provided separately and/or independently to each of the plurality of VMs running in the computer device during the virtualization. The secondary processing servicing may be provided using a dedicated component in the NIC, which may be fixed or removable.

    • While a computer system is in operational state, a network interface controller (NIC) in the computer system may be operable to copy select data to a secondary storage device. The secondary storage device is accessible by the NIC while the computer system is in an offline state or not operational. The NIC may be operable to provide remote accessibility to the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device over a network while the computer system is in the offline state and the NIC is supplied with electrical power and active. While the computer system is in the operational state and whenever a change is made to the select data, the NIC is operable to replace the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device with an updated copy of the select data based on the change.

    • A Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) communication system dynamically provides power and data communications over a communications link. In a computing environment made up of one or more personal computing devices (PCD) and/or one or more powered devices (PD), power source equipment (PSE) determines an allocated amount of power to be supplied to each device. The personal computing devices include a unified LAN-On-Motherboard (LOM) that combines the functionality of a powered device (PD) controller of a conventional PD and a LOM of a conventional personal computing device into a single unified subsystem. The unified LOM includes a standard or universal interface between the LOM and PD controller so that different types of PD devices with differing functionality can be easily married to the LOM, without requiring significant hardware or software redesign. The universal or standard interface includes a physical interface between the LOM and the PD controller and a compatible communication protocol to govern the communications between the LOM and the PD controller. This allows the LOM to be mixed and matched with any PD controller, enabling OEMs to economically provide multiple product models with varying degrees of PD and LOM functionality.

    • Methods and systems for coupling a laptop or other portable or hand-held device to a docking system using an Ethernet Interface are disclosed and may comprise interfacing a portable computing device to a docking station using an Ethernet interface. Power may be applied from the docking station to the portable computing device via the Ethernet interface using power over Ethernet (POE) protocol. Audio, video, multimedia, control and/or data signals may be communicated between the docking station and the portable computing device via the Ethernet interface. Data exchanged between the portable computing device and the docking station may be encapsulated in Ethernet frames and tagged appropriately. The interface may be accomplished by directly coupling an Ethernet port of the docking station to an Ethernet port of the portable computing device, or by utilizing an Ethernet cable. The docking station may be an active or passive docking station.
