    • A resettable switching device, e.g. a relay, comprises a fixed contact (18) and a movable contact (28). A solenoid (12) is fixed relative to the fixed contact and a ferromagnetic plunger (20) carries the movable contact. A spring (24) biases the plunger away from the fixed contact so the device is normally open. When the device is set a further ferromagnetic element, e.g. a plunger (22), holds the first plunger (20) in a closed-contact position by magnetic attraction against the action of the spring (24). When a predetermined current condition exists in the solenoid the magnetic attraction between the element and plunger is reduced below the level necessary to hold the plunger so that the movable contact disengages the fixed contact.

    • An end of life quenching device for a vapor lamp preventing damage to the lamp and socket structure. Mica is attached to a lead wire of a filament. As an emission material on the filament is consumed and the vapor lamp reaches the end of its life, the resulting increase in voltage causes an arc. The arc may extend down the lead wire. The hydrated OH group in the mica releases hydrogen, which extinguishes the arc within the vapor lamp. Damage is thereby prevented. The mica withstands the high pressing temperatures required in the manufacture of vapor lamps with quartz envelopes and used to generate ultraviolet radiation in germicidal applications.

    • Hydrophobic contaminants are removed from sludge that has been liquidized by violent shearing, by stirring a hydrophobic sorbent substance material into the sludge. After a period of time in which the contaminants are sorbed into the sorbent, the sorbent substance is separated from the sludge by gravity-settling, centrifuging, etc, where the sorbent is a liquid, or by filtration etc where the sorbent is a solid. Some sorbents have a melting point such that the sorbent can be liquid for good dispersal in heated sludge, and then can be solid when the sludge has cooled, whereby the sorbent can be removed e.g by filtration. Liquefaction by violent shearing causes the biosolids in the sludge to go into solution, which leaves the hydrophobic contaminants more available to be sorbed.

    • A device for detecting a fault in an AC supply comprises a circuit (CT, 100) for detecting a fault in an AC supply to a load (LD) and providing a corresponding output (IO), and an electromechanical switch means (SOLI, SWI) to disconnect the load from the supply if said output persists for at least a certain period of time. The device includes a generator (30) of intermittent test pulses each simulating a fault. In certain embodiments the duration of each test pulse is less than said certain period of time, and the circuit includes means (D2) for providing a visual and/or audible indication in response to the detection of test pulses by the detecting circuit.

    • A device for detecting a fault in an AC supply comprises a circuit (CT, 100) for detecting a particular type of fault in an AC supply to a load (LD) and providing a corresponding output (10). A relay (RLA) is responsive to said output (10) to open a set of load contacts (SW1) in the AC supply to disconnect the load from the supply. Test means (TS, Rt, W2) are provided for simulating a supply fault of the said type, and means (C3, R5, SCR2, SOL, SW2) are provided for causing the load contacts (SW1) to open if they do not open in response to the simulated fault within a certain period of time.
