    • In a process of forming a chromate coating on a series of articles of one of the metals, zinc, alloys consisting predominantly of zinc, magnesium, cadmium, copper, silver or brass by treating them with a single aqueous acidic solution containing hexavalent chromium in which the metal or trivalent chromium tends to accumulate in the solution during the treatment and interfere with the coating, the concentration of interfering metal is maintained at a level below that at which it deletenously affects the coating by withdrawing portions of the solution, passing them through a bed of a cation-exchange resin in a form containing both hydrogen ions and other cations that are harmless to the coating in proportions such that the solution is maintained in the effective pH range, and then returning them to the main body of the solution. The other cations may be those of alkali metals or ammonium. Treatment of the solution (which may also contain simple or complex fluoride ions, phosphate ions, sulphate ions, chloride ions, nitrate ions, ferricyanide ions, or arsenate ions) with the resin may be either continuous or intermittent; and two beds of resin are preferably used so that treatment of the solution and regeneration of the resin may be performed simultanously.

    • Ferrous strip is phosphated by treatment with an aqueous acidic zinc phosphate solution containing, by weight 0.05-1.5% zinc 0.12-7.5% calcium, 0.4-2.5% phosphate (as PO4), and an oxidizing agent other than chlorate in an amount sufficient to produce a uniform coating weighing at least 50 mg/sq. foot in not more than 10 seconds, and is then cold rolled. The process is applied to pickled hot-rolled strip. Suitable oxidizing agents are nitrates, nitrites, sulphites, hypochlorites, iodates, periodates, bromates, hydrogen peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, quinones, and organic nitro-compounds such as picric acid, nitroguanidine, nitromethane, nitrourethane, nitraniline, nitrophenol, m - nitrobenzene sulphonate and dinitrobenzene sulphonate. The coatings may be rinsed with a dilute aqueous solution of chromic acid, borax, sodium nitrite or soda ash. The strip is preferably activated after pickling and prior to coating by treating it with an aqueous solution of oxalic acid; tetrasodium pyrophosphate; a mixture of tetrasodium pyrophosphate and a metaphosphate; a dialkyl metal phosphate containing lead, tin or arsenic; or tetrasodium pyrophosphate and/or disodium phosphate containing titanium or zirconium: suitable titanium compounds are the chloride, hydroxide, nitride and titanium potassium oxalate.
