    • The cover/guard (10) includes a main body section (12) and two end sections (14,16) which are sewn thereto along its end edges (32,34). A middle section (18) is secured across the main body section (12) at the longitudinal midpoint thereof. The cover/guard sections each comprise a foam rubber inner portion (20), such as Neoprene, with the inner surface thereof being treated to produce a skin surface, while to the outside surface of the inner portion (20) is secured a fabric portion (26), such as nylon, which is water resistant. The inner portion (20), being stretchable and cushioning, provides effective protection for a scope. The cover/guard (10) can be stretched to accommodate many different sizes of scopes. Two bands (40,42) conveniently hold the cover/guard (10) on the scope.

    • A system for distributing electronic messages in an efficient manner using centralized storage and management. In particular, the system receives electronic messages to be distributed to one or more recipients, centrally stores a single copy of the message as well as various information about sending the message, and sends to each recipient a short indicator message to notify the recipient that the electronic message is available. The system then tracks and manages requests from the recipients to access the message by permitting access when appropriate, performing activities such as decrypting/encrypting the message if necessary, recording information about the access and about recipient instructions related to the message, archiving the message if necessary, and deleting the message when it is no longer needed. After a recipient receives an indicator, the recipient can use the indicator to access and review the message. The recipient can also provide various instructions about actions to be taken with the message corresponding to an indicator, such as to save or delete the message or to forward the message to another recipient. After all recipients have reviewed the message and no recipient has currently indicated to save the message (or all have indicated to delete the message), the system can then delete the single copy of the message.

    • A system for monitoring a computer system with an external status monitor during the power-on self test (POST) of the computer system. The computer system has tasks to be performed during the POST process. Each task has a token corresponding to an original message or a subsequently added message. Each subsequently added message is stored in the computer system, and each original message is stored in the external status monitor. Under the control of the computer system, the system identifies a task for the computer system to perform. The system then retrieves the token for the identified task and determines whether the retrieved token corresponds to an original message or a subsequently added message. If the retrieved token corresponds to an original message, the system sends only the retrieved token to the external status monitor. If not, the system retrieves the stored message for the retrieved token, notifies the external status monitor that a message will be sent, and sends a token and the retrieved message to the external status monitor. Under the control of the external status monitor, the system receives the token sent from the computer system. When the received token corresponds to an original message, the system retrieves the corresponding message for the received token and displays the retrieved message. When the external status monitor is notified that a new message is being sent, the system receives the message sent from the computer system and displays the received message.

    • This invention relates to method and reagents for inhibiting furin endoprotease activity and specifically for inhibiting furin endoprotease-mediated maturation of bioactive proteins in vivo and in vitro. The invention specifically provides proteins capable of inhibiting furin endoprotease activity. Particularly provided are .alpha..sub.1 -antitrypsin variants that specifically inhibit furin endoprotease activity. Methods for using furin endoprotease inhibition to attenuate or prevent viral protein maturation, and thereby alleviate viral infections, are provided. Also provided are methods for using furin endoprotease inhibition to attenuate or prevent proteolytic processing of bacterial toxins, thereby alleviating bacterial infections. Methods are also provided to inhibit proteolytic processing of biologically active proteins and peptides. The invention also provides pharmaceutically acceptable compositions of therapeutically effective amounts of furin endoprotease inhibitors.

    • A computer system having a motherboard that is adapted to receive a daughterboard containing a CPU coupled to a PCI bus and a memory device through a system controller. The PCI bus is, in turn, coupled to a storage device, such as a programmable array logic device, containing CPU data identifying the type of CPU or other hardware installed on the daughterboard. The motherboard includes a memory device storing a BIOS program as well as a startup program. The startup program is executed by the CPU at power up or reset to cause the CPU to compare the CPU data identifying the CPU to BIOS data identifying the CPU adapted to execute the BIOS program. In the event that the CPU data and the BIOS data match, the CPU executes the BIOS program in a normal manner. In the event the CPU data does not match the BIOS data, the CPU executes a crisis recovery routine which may involve writing the proper BIOS program from a floppy disk to a programmable memory device containing the BIOS program on the motherboard. The CPU can then execute the proper BIOS program from the programmable memory.
