    • A module for an on-board evaporative emission leak detection system that detects leakage from an evaporative emission space of a fuel system of an automotive vehicle. A housing provides an inlet port, an outlet port, and a flow path between the inlet port and the outlet port. An electric-motor-operated impeller pump causes flow in one direction along the flow path when in a pumping mode of operation. The pump is open to flow in both the one direction and an opposite direction when in a non-pumping mode. A solenoid-operated valve is disposed in the flow path to block flow through the flow path when in a blocking mode and to pass flow through the flow path when in a passing mode. A pressure switch is exposed to the flow path at the outlet port. A lead frame assembly provides respective electric circuit connections to the motor, solenoid, and pressure switch.

    • An ultra quiet electric motor includes a drive shaft, bearing structure rotatably supporting the drive shaft, and an armature assembly and commutator each fixed on the drive shaft. A motor housing is disposed around the armature assembly and has an open end portion. A permanent magnet structure is disposed between the motor housing and the armature. Brush structure is provided having a pair of brush support arms each guiding a generally crescent-shaped brush. Each of the brushes contacts the commutator. A noise absorbing housing is defined by a plurality of walls and is disposed generally around the brush structure. Noise absorption material covers at least a portion of at least one of the walls of the noise absorbing housing. An end cap is fixed to the motor housing to close the open end portion thereof. The structure of the motor is such that during operation, a decibel rating of approximately 32 dbA is generated.

    • A brushless pump-motor has a pump housing having an impeller chamber with an impeller in the impeller chamber. A motor assembly is coupled to the pump housing. The motor assembly includes a stator assembly having a plurality of core members. A connecting structure couples the plurality of core members with respect to each other to form a generally annular core assembly such that adjacent core members are disposed in non-contacting relation. Windings are operatively associated with the core members. The stator assembly has an interior portion defining a rotor chamber and a rotor assembly is disposed in the rotor chamber. The connecting structure has a partition portion constructed and arranged to isolate the windings from the rotor chamber. A shaft is provided on which the rotor assembly and impeller are mounted. The shaft includes a hollow portion in open communication with the rotor chamber. Bearing structure is operatively associated with the hollow portion of the shaft for supporting the shaft for rotational movement. An electronic control unit is coupled to the motor assembly and has an upper surface in communication with the rotor chamber. A fluid flow path structure is constructed and arranged to permit fluid (1) to pass from a high pressure portion of the impeller chamber and enter the rotor chamber so that the rotor assembly may be submerged in the fluid, (2) to contact the upper surface of the electronic control unit to cool the electronic control unit, (3) to contact the core members, with the partition portion preventing the fluid from contacting the windings, and (4) to enter the hollow portion of the shaft to cool the bearing structure.

    • A direct current motor having a primary armature winding, a secondary armature winding and a switching circuit adapted to selectively energize the primary winding and the secondary winding to achieve three-speed motor operation is disclosed. The system also includes a voltage source providing a direct current level voltage with respect to an electric ground and a switching circuit adapted to operate the motor. The switching circuit is coupled to the voltage supply for energizing the primary winding only to achieve a high speed, energizing only the secondary winding to achieve a medium speed, and energizing both the primary winding and the secondary winding in series with each other to achieve a low speed. A method of operating the motor also disclosed.

    • A high speed electric motor for automotive applications that is designed to effectively minimize vibration of its component parts and thus suppress noise generated during its operation. The motor incorporates acoustic engineering principles including surface vibration control, acoustic radiation efficiency, active intensity field control and noise control using acoustic materials to reduce overall vibration of the motor components and the motor noise sensed by the passenger of the vehicle. A housing is disclosed for an electric motor of the type having an armature with an armature shaft and magnet means for inducing rotational movement of the armature shaft. The housing includes a housing member dimensioned to minimize noise energy and having a main body section with an internal chamber for at least partially accommodating the armature and the magnet means. The main body section defines an axial length and an internal cross-sectional dimension. The length is less than about 1.25 times the distance of the internal dimension. With this particular dimensional arrangement, the housing, in effect, desirably creates a reactive intensity field to at least partially counteract an active intensity field generated during operation. In a preferred embodiment, the axial length of the housing member ranges from about 0.50 to about 0.80 times the distance of the internal dimension to create the desired reactive field.

    • When a tank filler tube cap is closed, several flow paths having solenoid-operated valves are selectively operated by an engine management computer to control pressurizing of a bladder disposed in a fuel tank and of surrounding fuel vapor space not occupied by the bladder to attenuate fuel vapor generation. Venting of the bladder to atmosphere and of the vapor headspace to a canister are also controlled. The control further regulates the pressure in the bladder relative to that in the vapor headspace. On-board testing for leakage can be automatically accomplished for ascertaining compliance with relevant regulations. When the tank is to be re-fueled, a signal is sent to the computer. If conditions, as sensed by certain sensors, are appropriate, the computer unlatches an access door to the filler tube cap so that upon removal of the cap, no significant pressure differential that might cause vapor to be expelled from the tank to atmosphere, or impede the filling of the tank with fuel from the nozzle, is present. As liquid fuel is dispensed into the tank, the combined volumes of the bladder and the tank vapor headspace are reduced by the volume of liquid fuel introduced into the tank. The headspace cannot be re-pressurized until the cap again closes the filler tube.
