    • A system and method for anti-aliasing of text overlays on electronic images comprises a text-font manager for loading background color and selected font data which includes font type, font size, and font color, and for obtaining a text string for overlay on the electronic image. The invention also includes a graphics manager for retrieving bit-mapped data for the selected font data and text string and for retrieving current pixel information from the bit-mapped data. The invention further comprises an anti-aliasing module for adjusting the inactive pixels of each character of the character text string based upon the surrounding pixels in the bit-mapped data. The anti-aliasing module overlays the electronic image with the active and adjusted text character pixels. The image merged with text is saved in memory and/or displayed on the electronic imaging display device.

    • A method and apparatus for integrating a user interface across multiple operating modes of a digital camera including a display. When the digital camera is placed into each one of the multiple operating modes, mode-specific items corresponding to that mode are displayed on the display. The digital camera includes a first button and a second button for interacting with the multiple operating modes, where the first button has a first orientation, and the second button has a second orientation. The method and apparatus includes mapping an aligned set of mode-specific items in the display to the orientation of the first button. After the mode-specific items are displayed, the user scrolls from one mode-specific item to the next in the aligned set by pressing the first button and the display indicates which of the mode-specific items is a currently active item. When a mode-specific item becomes the active item, additional information corresponding to the currently active item is displayed in the display in a location offset from the active item in a direction of orientation corresponding to that of the second button.

    • A method and system is disclosed for accelerating a user interface on a display of an image capture unit. The image capture unit includes a plurality of image files for providing a plurality of images. In a first aspect, the method and system comprise selecting an image based upon a scrolling method and providing a predetermined number of speculation buffers. The method and system include organizing the predetermined number of speculation buffers based upon the selected image so as to assign each of the predetermined number of speculation buffers to store one of the plurality of images in response to the scrolling method. In a second aspect, the image capture unit operates in a plurality of modes The image capture unit also includes a plurality of input buffers which are utilized in one of the plurality of modes and are unutilized on at least one of the other of the plurality of modes. The method and system in accordance with this aspect comprise reallocating the input buffers as speculation buffers and providing image data from the image files to the speculation buffers when the image capture unit is in the at least one of the plurality of modes.

    • A fixed-focus camera having a retractable close-up lens, fixed-focus lens, infrared filter, and optical low-pass filter disposed along an optical axis within a housing. The close-up lens is switchable between a close-up position coaxial with the optical axis and a far position not coaxial with the optical axis. Light received from a target passes through an aperture in the housing and then through the lenses and filters. An image sensor receives the filtered light and outputs a two-dimensional array signal of corresponding voltages proportional to the energy of light striking each sensing element. The voltage signal from the image sensor is filtered using a high-pass filter and the high-frequency components of the signal are measured to determine a relative focal value for the light received from the target. The close-up lens is retracted for calculating a far-position focal value and then engaged for calculating a close-up position focal value, and the calculated focal values are compared to empirically-derived constant values to determine which lens position will produce a better-focused image.

    • An image processing system for high performance digital imaging in a digital camera. The reflected light from an image is focused through a lens and optically filtered. A CCD array converts this image into an electrical signal. This electrical signal is processed and then converted into an equivalent digital signal. A digital signal processor is then used to process the raw digital signal. The DSP includes a capture data path, a data flow control, an image processing data path, a compression/decompression engine, a resize circuit, a display processing circuit, and a rotation circuit. Data is routed between the DSP and memory via a bus. By selectively activating and reusing certain parts of the hardware architecture and various data paths, at least four modes of operation can be supported: live view, instant review, and play mode. Furthermore, the correct image is automatically displayed in all four modes, regardless of the orientation of the image or the physical orientation of the camera (both at the time the picture was taken and at the time the picture is being rendered for display).
