    • A field controlled plasma discharge display element is disclosed for light source use in single element and multiple element plasma discharge electrostatic printers. The display element includes a pair of hollow discharge electric field electrodes, and a third electrode positioned external to and aligned with the discharge electric field electrodes for generating a control electric field proximate to the discharge electric field. The control electric field is used to control the intensity of the plasma discharge by distorting the shape of the generated discharge electric field. The single element plasma discharge device is modulated in accordance with the image to be printed and the modulated output is scanned across the photoconductive surface to produce the latent image. The multi-element matrix hollow cathode discharge device, on the other hand, generates the latent image on the photoconductive surface using either a line imaging (using a one by y matrix discharge device) effect or a page imaging (using an x by y matrix discharge device) effect.

    • A gas-filled discharge tube includes a tubular body formed of an electrically insulating material, and has engaging portions respectively at opposite ends thereof. A pair of electrode bases are provided; at least one of the electrode bases is formed of an electrically conducting thin metal sheet, airtightly adhered to the respective open ends. A pair of discharge electrodes are provided; the discharge electrodes have flange portions which are engaged with the respective engaging portions and sandwiched between the tubular body and the respective electrode bases. One of the electrode bases is formed with a gas filling bore by a laser beam for filling an inert gas. The gas filling bore is welded by the laser beam after the inert gas is filled in the tubular body, so as to seal and enclose the inert gas therein.

    • A CROSSATRON plasma switch has a peak current capability in excess of 10kA and a switching speed of at least 1.times.10.sup.11 A/sec, making it compatible with the requirements of excimer and CO.sub.2 gas laser switches, and yet is small enough to be mechanically integrated with such lasers. It employs an axially corrugated cathode with a body diameter on the order of 10 cm and shallow corrugations whose depths are about 1.0-1.5 times the distance between corrugations, together with a reduced diameter anode (of about 2.5 cm diameter for an excimer laser and about 1.25 cm diameter for a CO.sub.2 laser), to obtain a plasma volume of about 50-100 cm.sup.3 for rapid switching. A magnet assembly around the cathode uses only two stacked magnets, but has an overall greater axial length and surface magnetic strength than in prior switches. The magnet design produces a high field strength near the cathode, but without a significant extension of the field into the anode region.

    • A plasma display device and a driving method thereof are disclosed in which cathodes are provided in the form of steps or in the form of depressions and projections to form multistep discharge gaps between the cathodes and anodes, while amplitude modulated pulses, width modulated pulses, or composite width/amplitude modulated pulses are supplied to the cathode or anodes, the pulse amplitudes for the different steps being set in such a manner that the discharges should occur selectively or wholly at the different discharge regions of the different gaps formed by the cathodes. The device of the present invention improves the gray scale to a great extent.
