    • A colloidal gas core nuclear reactor having a high tensile strength outer semispheroidal pressure shell enclosing a moderator body member which surrounds a central cavity with an expanding nozzle at one end thereof. The greatest cavity radius is at the end remote from the nozzle. Hydrogen gas is supplied to the cavity to provide a vortex fow within the cavity. A conical duct is provided between the throat of the nozzle and the expansion portion of the nozzle. A groove and particle catcher is provided between the duct and expansion portion of the nozzle. The groove leads to a particle outlet duct.

    • A pebble-bed nuclear reactor of large power rating comprises a container having a funnel-shaped bottom forming a pebble run-out having a centrally positioned outlet. A bed of downwardly-flowing substantially spherical nuclear fuel pebbles is positioned in the container and forms a reactive nuclear core maintained by feeding unused pebbles to the bed's top surface while used or burned-out pebbles run out and discharge through the outlet. A substantially conical body with its apex pointing upwardly and its periphery spaced from the periphery of the container spreads the bottom of the bed outwardly to provide an annular flow down the funnel-shaped bottom forming the run-out, to the discharge outlet. This provides a largely constant downward velocity of the spheres throughout the diameter of the bed throughout a substantial portion of the down travel, so that all spheres reach about the same burned-out condition when they leave the core, after a single pass through the core area.

The cavity wall has a gradually increasing radius from the nozzle end in a direction upstream within the cavity. A hydrogen gas manifold is positioned at the maximum radius of the cavity and supplies gas to the cavity through a plurality of annularly positioned swirl vanes. Additional hydrogen gas is supplied to the cavity with a tangential component through nozzles positioned in a plurality of positions of the cavity wall adjacent the exit nozzle to prevent the flow of nuclear particles along the forward wall boundary layer to the exit nozzle.
