    • To cool a grate block which forms a part of a grate for plants for the thermal treatment of waste material, a closed cooling space in the grate block below an upper wall supporting the waste material is filled with cooling water. Water feed lines and water drainage lines pass through the cooling space, end in the cooling space, and respectively have a plurality of outlet and inlet openings, so that, in addition to an effective cooling which greatly reduces the temperatures, an optimum distribution of cold water and hot water also takes place in the cooling space. Since thermal expansions in the material are dispensed with, only a few screwed-together grate blocks can form a grate-block row. The assembly and exchange of grate blocks are simpler and an undesired amount dropping through the grate between the grate blocks is eliminated to a great extent. Moreover, the grate blocks can be produced from a less high-alloy material.

    • A movable grate comprising a number of grate steps which are arranged adjacent each other, partly overlap one another and are pivotable around an axis extending in the longitudinal direction of said grate step, and which are pivotably mounted outside shield members (7, 10) which in lateral direction enclose a combustion chamber, end plates (5) being rigidly secured to the ends of the grate steps and swingable therewith, the end plates being aligned with and fitted in openings in the shield members. The novel matter of the invention resides in that portions (10) of the shield members having such openings aligned with the end plates (5), are displaceably mounted relative to adjoining shield members (7) in the direction of the grate step axis, and that the shield portions (10) which outwardly sealingly engage adjoining shield members (7) and inwardly sealingly engage the end plates (5), are in the direction of said axis rigidly secured to the grate step shaft.

    • This invention relates to a grate for burning solid combustibles and, more particularly, refuse in a fired furnace. The grate comprises a plurality of steps, each step including a plurality of adjacent grate bars with alternate steps of grate bars being movable relative to an adjacent step of stationary grate bars. Each grate bar includes a substantially horizontal platform terminating in a front lip, a pusher and means for pivotally mounting said pusher beneath the platform at a point near the back of the platform. The pusher includes a faceplate shaped to form an elongated channel with the undersurface of the lip to pass combustion air to said firing chamber. The relative position of the pusher and horizontal platform can be adjusted to vary the size of the air channel in order to adjust the amount of air fed to the firing chamber.
