    • A knitting tool, such as a selector sinker or a needle for a knitting machine, includes a flat shank and a narrow elongate control spring projecting from a slot-like opening in a narrow side of the shank. One end of the control spring has a broader anchorage section at one end which is inserted into a recess provided at an inward end of the opening in the shank. The width of the recess, measured transversely to the longitudinal extent of the opening, is greater, at least at certain locations, than the width of the opening. The thickness of the anchorage section of the control spring is less than or equal to the depth of the recess. As a result, the control spring is rigidly anchored in the shank in a manner secure against rotation.

    • Methods for circular weft knitting of variegated articles and selectively programmable circular weft knitting machine apparatus for carrying out such methods including means for effecting selective, controlled two dimensional displacement of compound needle member components and associated sinker elements so as to provide each such needle member with the selectable capability of performing a knit, tuck or float operation at each yarn feed location independent of the direction of knitting needle approach thereto. Also included therein are constructions for compound needle elements, sinker elements and terry instruments, as well as the provision of unbroken continuous cam tracks for effecting such controlled two dimensional displacement of yarn engaging knitting elements in a path that is symmetric about each adjacent pair of yarn feed locations and also is symmetric with respect to the midlocation halfway therebetween; an yarn feed system capable of presenting a plurality of yarns for selected utilization at each one of a plurality of yarn feed locations and means for monitoring yarn consumption and effecting adjustments in actual stitch length in response thereto. All of the foregoing are incorporated in an overall processor controlled knitting system that provides for central computerized control and performance monitoring of a plurality of remote knitting machines in association with individual control means associated with each knitting machine, each of the latter being of a construction that accommodates operations in accord with preprogrammed instruction and continuous monitoring of individual knitting machine performance in comparison therewith.

    • A flat knitting machine comprises flexible shank needles arranged in the dle channels of the needle bed, and, arranged behind these, jacquard jacks as well as a cam system which is movable over the needle bed and which comprises interengageable needle, jacquard and selection cam units which have fixed and shiftable cam elements. In order to create the possibility of selection for the flexible shank needles with sinkable needle butts, and in which the needle channel cutting is without interruption, i.e. can be produced with constant depth by one cutting pass, the flexible shank needles have an anterior first needle butt always projecting from the needle bed and a posterior second needle butt which sinks into the needle bed under the resilience of its own flexible shank. Behind each flexible shank needle there is provided a displaceable arresting jack having an arresting jack butt as well as a coupling portion at its forward end for coupling to the flexible shank of the flexible shank needle and for simultaneously lifting the second needle butt from the needle bed. Behind the arresting jack there is displaceably mounted a jacquard jack which has a first, operating butt and a second, selection butt. In the needle cam unit, at least in the region of the second needle butt, and symmetrically arranged with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the cam system, there are provided two needle sinkers displaceable in the plane of the cam system and two cam units shiftable into and out of the plane of the cam system for extending the needles in the formation of stitches.

    • This multiple needle cylinder hosiery knitting machine is provided with a single horizontally disposed pattern disc surrounding the needle cylinders and controlling the simultaneous knitting of a sock on each of the needle cylinders. All of the instrumentalities used in knitting a sock at each needle cylinder, such as the yarn feed fingers, yarn cutters, the needle selecting devices, etc., are controlled by cams on the pattern disc. Drive means is provided for imparting step-by-step movement to the single pattern disc and a pattern chain controls movement of the pattern disc. Easy access is provided to the pattern disc and to each of the needle cylinders for changing patterns, cleaning and lubricating, for replacing parts, and for making other adjustments and repairs to the machine.

    • Mechanism for selecting and controlling needles of circular knitting machine wherein, at each feed of the knitting machine, there is provided a cam path in which is engageable an outwardly projecting butt on an axially reciprocable needle to reciprocate the needle. An activating swing jack is pivoted to the bottom of the needles and a selector jack is pivoted to the unit and is operatively associated with the activating swing jack. A selector butt and a complementary eraser butt on the selector jack are respectively positively engaged by a selector lever and an eraser lever, the selector lever moving the jacks and hence the needles whereby the needle butts engage in the cam path while the eraser lever move the jacks and hence the needles, whereby the needle butts are disengaged from the cam path, respectively to bring the needle into its operative and inoperative condition. The selector and eraser levers cooperate with the selector and eraser butts of the selector jack over the entire length of the feed.

    • In a circular knitting machine, needle selection is controlled by pattern keys mounted on a pivoted pattern key carrier and having patterning butts which are selectively engageable with vertically stacked selector slides. The selector slides are engageable selectively with selector butts on pressers associated with needle jacks. When a presser is engaged by a selector slide the corresponding jack is pressed in so that a control butt on the jack is not engaged by a needle-operating cam. Pivoting of the pattern key carrier is controlled by a boat-shaped cam follower which is carried on an arm on the pattern key carrier and travels in one or another of circular tracks concentric with the needle cylinder. Means is provided for switching the cam followers from one track to another, thereby pivoting the pattern key carrier to bring other pattern keys into engagement with selector slides.

    • Multi-feed circular knitting machine having three level selecting means for lever operated needles. Selectively operated pattern jacks individually associated with the control means are provided to disengage selected ones of the control members from the needle raise cam at two places along the face thereof in order to position selected ones of the needles at welt, tuck and at knit levels.
