    • A fluid bearing with a multicomponent membrane which is inflated to form a torus defining a plenum chamber. The preferred three layer membrane has a fluid impermeable inner layer, a middle layer of a dimensionally stable fabric, and an abrasion resistant outer layer. The layers may be replaced independently. A number of different mechanisms for attaching the layers to the load-carrying member of the bearing are shown, and different membranes having different lift heights may be used with a single load-carrying member. In one embodiment one of a series of interchangeable metal rings of different diameters used with the middle layer of the membrane may be selected to control the lift height. The bearing also includes a replaceable orifice plate which controls the rate of flow into the plenum chamber and into and out of the torus membrane. A valve operates during the usual gradual start up to block flow of fluid to the plenum until the pressure in the torus membrane is one or two p.s.i. above atmospheric.

    • A water borne air cushion vehicle having a flat rigid upper rectangular sheet-like platform, and a plurality of flat rigid longitudinal walls attached substantially at right angles thereto and depending therefrom substantially parallel with the major axis of the platform. Two of the walls are disposed as side walls along respective edges of the platform, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced laterally aligned arrays of flexible trough-shaped skirts are looped with a space therein and fastened along the longitudinal edge of the underside of the platform flush with, but movable with respect to adjacent pairs of the walls. The skirts are extendable to a lesser depth than that of the walls, and a source of pressurized air is admitted through apertures of fixed size at a relatively high pressure to the skirts. Also, low pressure air is admitted through variable sized openings remotely controlled and located beneath the platform in communication with at least four square or rectangular open bottomed air cushion chambers disposed laterally in pairs. Each of the four square air cushion chambers are bounded by an adjacent pair of skirts and by an adjacent pair of walls, the depth of the walls and of the skirts being so related to the flow rate of air that the vehicle is buoyant upon water. The walls protrude into the water sufficiently to prevent air spillage when the vehicle is urged longitudinally through the water by a propulsion system. The skirt air inlet openings are adapted to readmit by reverse flow at least part of the compressed air in any one of the skirts independently in response to fugitive deflection of the skirts. The skirts are bag-like structures attached along one side to the underside of the platform via a brace comprising a flexible sheet extending through the width of the skirt.

    • A seal structure for an air cushion vessel includes an inflatable bag secd to the hull and a plurality of juxtaposed, interconnected planer members maintained in operative position beneath the bag by a plurality of support straps. Each planer member includes a transversely reinforced shell portion and a flexible, resilient membrane secured to the longitudinal edge portions of the shell portion to form a flexible planing surface for the seal structure. The planer members may have tapered aft end portions and curved planing surfaces to provide a gradual change of the interface between the planer members and the water.

    • A testing system and method for testing and evaluating the performance andervice life of finger seals and skirts used on surface effects ships (SES). The system simulates actual conditions that SES seals would encounter and tests full scale portions of seals and skirts. The system and method comprises placing a number of seals together in a mounting frame that moves the finger relative to another surface to simulate the chaffing and wear that occurs during actual pitch and roll. Below and in contact with the finger seals/skirts is a surface which has a wave-shaped rigid contoured surface movable as a unit vertically and horizontally. On the surface is a water-retaining pile-like material that retains water flowed thereon.
