    • A roll forming machine includes side roll stands which are changed by use of a cart and set up fixture which are movable parallel to the pass line through the stands. When a side roll stand is to be changed, a changing cart is moved into position such that rails on the cart are aligned with rails on the fixed support supporting the side roll stand. The side roll stand is moved off of the fixed support and onto the cart, and then moved from the cart into an empty station on a set up fixture. A retooled stand is moved from another station on the set up fixture onto the cart and then from the cart back onto the fixed support. Accordingly, time to effect changeover of a stand is reduced substantially from prior art methods, and no heavy equipment, such as a crane, is required.

    • A roll former line for forming different shapes including a first roll stand attached to a bed which provides vertical adjustable movement. The roll stand includes three spindles in vertical alignment with each other, the forming rolls on the top and bottom spindles working against opposite sides of the middle forming roll, so as to provide reverse shapes between the top and middle forming roll and the middle and bottom forming roll. Linear actuators are connected to the bed of the first roll stand for moving the first roll stand vertically on the bed. Opposite the first roll stand on the line is a second roll stand attached to a second bed including two spindles in vertical alignment and corresponding forming rolls thereon. The first roll stand can be raised or lowered by the linear actuators so as to use reverse forming rolls on the first roll stand in conjunction with the forming rolls on the second roll stand to form a reverse shape on one edge of the sheet being formed.

    • A device for changing a roll disk arranged in a free-floating fashion on a roll shaft and braced against a shoulder of the roll shaft, the device including a roll shaft piece connectable to an end face of the roll shaft and having radially projecting claws. An installation-and-removal unit is placeable on and coaxially turnable to the roll shaft. The unit has radially extending first, second and third claws that form perimeter segments. The first claws correspond to and engage with the claws of the roll shaft piece. A taper bushing is slidably provided between the roll disk and the roll shaft to hold the roll disk on the roll shaft, and has radially extending claws. The second claws correspond to and engage with the taper bushing claws, and are also moveable axially to the roll shaft. A ring is coaxially mounted on a side of the roll disk facing the unit, and has radially extending claws that correspond to and engage behind the third claws. All the claws have a perimeter extension whereby the corresponding claws lie perimetrically next to one another in a plane seen in the axial direction when the unit is placed on the roll shaft. The unit is turnable between a first position in which the claws of the roll shaft piece and the taper bushing respectively engage with the first and second claws, and a second position in which only the claws of the ring engage with the third claws.

    • The apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable devices each holding a plurality of metal shaping and/or cutting rollers, the rollers of one device meshing with rollers of the other device to produce specific designs or widths of material. This is made possible by merely selecting suitable rollers of both sets and when production of a specific metallic section of desired widths are terminated, other rollers are selected by rotating the rotatable devices. When suitable rollers have been selected they are locked in operating position and when another design or widths are required, the devices are unlocked, a selection is made, and the devices are again locked to produce the new metallic section or widths of material. The present quick automated tool changer, i.e. QATC, roll forming apparatus is characterized by a novel indexing device for the two forming rolls to be used in a roll forming operation; by the use of Brushless-type motors for individually driving the shafts carrying the forming rolls in use, these motors being of the constant torque type; by quick-changing supports carrying the rolls for allowing the rolls which are not in use to be changed; by sensors on the cylinders providing the force on the forming rolls for giving feedback to the operator on changes in this force; and by a pair of gears selectively engageable with the gearing mechanism linking the Brushless motors to the forming rolls in use for providing a larger range of operating speeds of the forming rolls.

    • The invention focuses on improvements to cantilevered roughing, intermediate and finishing rolling mill stands, primarily for long products. A basic improvement to 2-high and cluster mill stands includes mounting of the rolling bearings upon a stationary cantilevered arbor directly under the roll ring, eliminating heavily-loaded main reaction bearings within the stand housing in limited radial space. Individual drive motor assemblies for each shaft, rigidly coupled and directly supported by the drive shafts, are also advocated, in preference to floor-mounted drives via pinion stands to spindles and couplings. This eliminates drive reaction forces acting against the stand assembly, allowing direct measurement and control of interstand tension/compression, for which appropriate hardware is outlined. A cluster mill assembly features work roll cartridge assemblies adapted for off-line set-up and ultra-fast roll and guide changes, which is particularly adapted to intermediate and finishing pass applications. The work rolls are neckless, with the cartridge frame and bearings serving only to maintain roll position, rather than carry rolling loads. Roll size and material can then be governed entirely by stock size and reduction requirements, rather than by load carrying capacity. Included are means for axial adjustment of roll position, and roll parting adjustment symmetrically about the pass line. Mountings having quickly-interchangeable horizontal, vertical or angular transverse orientation are additional features, as are applications to tandem mill trains incorporating direct, automatic cascade tension-free rolling.
