    • A mechanism is provided for booting a computer system that is capable of implementing different instruction set architectures, through a network. An embodiment of the invention includes a network controller implemented for a first ISA and a processor capable of implementing programs written in a second ISA as well as programs written in the first ISA. Following preliminary boot operations provided through non-volatile system memory, a network boot program provided by the network controller is implemented. The boot program requests the non-volatile system memory for an indication of the operating system to be loaded and generates a boot request for the indicated operating system. When the indicated operating system is written in the second ISA, the boot program loads the OS to a specified location in system memory and sends the processor into a mode suitable for executing the second ISA.

    • A system for factory installation of software that configures the storage resources in one or more file servers as a “cache.” The factory installation system includes at least one file server coupled to a storage management engine (SME) which is coupled to a library server. A target customer system being loaded with software is coupled to the file servers and library server. The library server will have sufficient storage capacity to maintain all of the software that may be requested by a target customer system. The storage management engine will determine which software programs included on the file server memory have been the least recently used and delete those files, thus causing the remaining files on the server memory to be the most recently used. When a target customer computer is being loaded, a request is first made to the file severs for the desired software. If the desired programs are located on the file servers, then a download to the customer computer is implemented. However, if the requested software is not present, the customer computer then sends a request to the library server for the desired software and a download from the library server to the customer computer occurs. When the target customer system requests the file from the library server, the request is logged in a directory in the library server. Periodically, the SME will read the logged requests and then update the file server memories with software which has been requested by the customer computers.

    • An information processing apparatus includes a rewritable non-volatile memory with first and second areas for storing a boot program, a central processing unit (CPU), a downloader for downloading a new boot program from outside the information processing apparatus, and a status monitoring circuit. The status monitoring circuit includes a status memory for periodically storing a boot selecting signal, which may change in response to a detected error. The status monitoring circuit generates a reset signal for rebooting if an error is detected and also selects a boot address, which indicates whether the first or second memory area should be used for the reboot in response to the boot selecting signal.
