摘要： An improved two printing step process for reproducing visual subject matter including the making of a secondary printing plate with a positive image random pattern screen and printing a substrate sequentially and in registry with the secondary printing plate and a master printing plate made with a conventional half tone screen. The random pattern screen is a positive image phototransparency having a large plurality of irregularly shaped highlight areas and contrasting shadow areas per square inch, an optical density from about 0.17 to about 1.6, a contrast factor from about 0.75 to about 1.5 and a transparency factor from about 0.25 to about 0.60. The random pattern screen is made from a transparent plate having light disruptive projections on its surface. A negative and a positive phototransparency of the transparent plate are made while controlling exposure and developing conditions to produce a positive image screen having the desired characteristics.

摘要： An improved halftone dot screen for use in reproduction of continuous-tone graphic images is disclosed. The screen comprises a two-dimensional matrix of cells (dots) each cell having a common pattern of transmittance to radiation utilized in the reproduction process. The common pattern of transmittance for each cell is characterized by a finite number of different discrete transmittance level patterns. In a preferred embodiment, these patterns include portions arranged along the respective sides of a parallelogram. In one preferred embodiment, the discrete transmittance level patterns comprise an array of concentric parallelograms. Each parallelogram has a plurality of dot portions arranged along the sides of the parallelogram. The sides of the parallelogram patterns are preferably disposed at a substantial angle to the horizontal to reduce moire and rosette pattern effects and to simplify the reproduction process.

摘要： Half-tone imaging is achieved in a flying spot scanning system wherein a highly collimated light beam is modulated with imaging information, reflected from a multifaceted rotating polygon and directed to a scanned medium through a light attenuating member. The latter member is supported proximate the imaging focal plane and orthogonal to the collimated, reflected light beam. The light attenuating member has an optical light transmission characteristic that varies in a continuous and cyclic pattern with a cycle period at least about ten times the maximum lateral extent of the collimated light beam, thereby serving to alter the system imaging from contrasting black and white patterns to half tones and gray colorations.
