    • A hand held musical instrument is capable of emitting sound through the combination of three elements: a hollow tube, a striking member, and a hinge to secure the striking member to the tube. The hollow tube is constructed of an ergonomic shape that allows easy and fatigue-free grasping. For low notes, the slots on the resonating end of the hollow tube are multi-sized to eliminate buzzing. The clapper is attached to the hollow tube through a combination of a stainless steel axle, polymer bearings and adjustable tensioning screws. This combination improves the durability of the instrument yet still allows the musician to adjust the strike feel. The invention also provides improvements in the clapper heads for both low note and middle and high note handchimes. For low notes, the clapper head is constructed of multiple layers that optimize sound quality. For middle or high notes, the rubber clapper head provides multiple settings which allows the musician to easily and precisely adjust the timbre setting.

    • A reel spinning apparatus for use in devices in which a plurality of reels carrying representations of symbols, letters, numbers or other indicia on their peripheries are assembled linearly spaced alongside each other and are free to rotate independently of each other in which each reel is rotatably mounted in a bracket which is itself pivotably mounted on a base in which is an electric motor and a shaft carrying friction drive wheels one for each reel. The reels each have an annular surface and frictional driving contact with one of the friction drive wheels, the weight of the reel and its associated bracket acting to hold the annular surface in engagement with the friction drive wheel. The reels are thus all driven together but may be stopped individually by means of a solenoid operated detent which is engageable in any one of a plurality of notches or the like formed around the circumference of each reel. On stopping a reel the friction drive wheel continues to rotate but simply slips on the surface of the reel.Alternatively the friction drive wheel can be clutch driven in such a way that the clutch will slip when the wheel is stopped.Associated with each reel is a sensor for sensing the position in which the reel has stopped. A preferred sensor is a photo optical apparatus operating in conjunction with holes formed in the reel the position of each of which is associated with one of the indicia arranged around the circumference of the reel.

    • A counter mechanism for the digital measurement of increments of a selected physical quantity, such as distance travelled by a motor vehicle, includes a first set of numbered counting wheels rotatably mounted in sequence upon a driven shaft with gear means interconnecting said counting wheels one with another in a velocity ratio of 1 to 10, and a second set of numbered counting wheels similarly arranged on a second shaft driven from a predetermined one of said numbered counting wheels in said first set. The second set of counting wheels commences to count multiples of said increments when said predetermined one counting wheel commences to rotate. The second set of numbered counting wheels can be reset to zero by means of a ratchet resetting device without affecting the position of the first set of numbered counting wheels. Such a mechanism is useful as a mileage recorder in the speedometer of a motor vehicle, the second set of numbered counting wheels serving as a direct visual indication to an observer of the mechanism of an attainment of a predetermined number of miles covered by the vehicle, which predetermined number correlates to a mileage limit for servicing, for example, a catalytic exhaust gas system on the vehicle. Preferably electrical contact means on the second set of counting wheels actuates a visual or audible warning signal once said predetermined number of miles is reached. Once the vehicle has been reserviced, the second set of numbered counting wheels is returned to zero to start indicating the second corresponding mileage limit.

    • A metal tone bar type percussion musical instrument comprises a plurality of metallic tone bars arranged side by side on a pair of spaced apart support members. Each tone bar has at one nodal point a generally L-shaped engagement member including a vertical section and a horizontal section extending, respectively, perpendicular and parallel to the tone bar and has a through hole at the other nodal point. The tone bar is fixed to one of the support members by means of the L-shaped engagement member with the engagement member being mounted to the lower side of the tone bar, and to the other of the support members by driving a screw or nail thereinto through the hole.
