    • An expanded graphite sealing material is provided in which the adaptability of the principal face of an expanded graphite base member is improved, the bonding strength to a coating layer and the like can be increased, and the sealing properties can be enhanced. A method of producing such a sealing material, and a gasket sheet using the sealing material are also of concern. On at least a portion of a principal face of the expanded graphite base member in which expanded graphite particles are pressurized and integrated together, opened thin-leaf graphite portions are formed. The principal face of the expanded graphite base member having the thin-leaf graphite portions can be impregnated with a sealing member such as PTFE or covered with a coating layer. As the form of the sealing material, a sheet, a press-molded product, a fabric, a string, or a braided article can be adopted.

    • A knitting yarn for gland packing according to the present invention has a composite structure comprising: a string-like body formed by folding an expanded graphite tape in the widthwise direction thereof, thus forming folded layers; a first reinforcing member made of a knitted or braided body for covering the entire outer peripheral surface of the string-like body; and/or a yarn-like second reinforcing member interposed between the folded layers of the string-like body in the longitudinal direction thereof. A plurality of such knitting yarns are braided or twisted to form a gland packing. According to the present invention, the formation of an expanded graphite tape is facilitated and no slip is presented between the folded layers, thus providing a knitting yarn for gland packing excellent in strength and shape retention. With the use of such knitting yarns, brading or twisting can be facilitated and the resulting gland packing can be considerably improved in sealing performance.

    • A system for reducing packing ring spin and opening up of the joints formed by the ends of a packing ring during break-in of trapezoidally-shaped mechanical braided packing involves utilization of additional warp yarns within the sides of the packing. These additional warp yarns bulge the packing at the sides of the packing above its horizontal centerline such that the outer portion of the packing is provided with a solid rectangular cross section. The solid section increases frictional contact between the rings and the stuffing box and between the rings themselves to eliminate packing ring spin. When the packing is wrapped around a shaft the bulging sides become flat for secure elongated anti-spin contact both between the packing rings and between the end ring and the bottom of the stuffing box. The utilization of the anti-spin configuration eliminates packing ring spin and the opening up of the joints formed by the ends of the packing rings during break-in, regardless of operator error in the installation of the packing rings.

    • A packing for hermetically sealing a member. The packing in accordance with the present invention comprises braiding yarns each of which includes a plurality of longitudinally arranged reinforcing fiber yarns and expanded graphite integrally bonded to at least one side of the reinforcing fiber yarns with adhesives, so that the braiding yarns are provided with excellent sealing properties and strong tensile strength and toughness. A plurality of such braiding yarns may be put together to form a core member. The core member may be covered, at the outer periphery thereof, with a braided body of the braiding yarns. A plurality of such braiding yarns as put together may be braided (square-knitted). Alternatively, a plurality of such braiding yarns (4) as put together may be twisted. Thus, packing having a free length may be obtained. The packing thus obtained may be used as cut, at a site, to a predetermined length according to the size of the object member to be sealed. This eliminates production, based on estimations in advance, of a variety of annular packings according to the sizes of object members to be sealed, as done in molded packing.
