    • A tunnel monitoring system for monitoring vehicles traveling through a tunnel having at least one vehicle traffic lane is disclosed comprising a plurality of ultrasonic sensors arranged in series in a longitudinal direction of the tunnel. The sensors have a detection zone covering a portion of the traffic lane for detecting the presence of a vehicle in the detection zone, and the ultrasonic sensors generate a vehicle sensor signal upon detecting a vehicle in the detection zone and a sensor identification signal identifying which sensor the sensor signal is transmitted from. The detection zones are projected and arranged in relation to the traffic lane to provide a generally continuous detection of the vehicles traveling though the tunnel. An evaluation unit receives the vehicle sensor signals and the sensor identification signals for monitoring traffic in the tunnel.

    • A safety directional line for underground mining that can be adjusted during to conform with any local codes. The line is constructed from high strength polypropylene which is non-conductive. A flame retardant is added to the polypropylene to make it flame resistant. There are flame retardant and non-conductive directional indicator cones evenly spaced and positioned such that they are pointing along the axis of the line. The cones are placed on the line such that when someone is exiting the mine his hand slides along the slope of the cone and meets little resistance. In the event that the miner is traveling the wrong direction, his hand will meet the flat surface of the cone and come to a stop, indicating that he is traveling in the wrong direction. There is fluorescent tape on the cones to make it more clearly visible to one trying to exit the mine. The tape is formed in an X on the flat surface of the cone indicating that it is the wrong direction. Additionally, the tape is placed parallel to the axis of the cone along the conical surface indicating the correct direction of travel. The rope is connected at one end by a solid bronze ring and at the other end by a solid bronze swivel hook or a solid fixed hook. The bronze ring and hook are non-sparking and non-corrosive.

    • An operator's compartment for a mobile machine, such as a machine used in underground mining operations, is pivotally connected to the machine frame for positioning at a preselected elevation above the ground or in contact with the ground to follow the contour of the ground in a "free floating" condition. The first overhead canopy is supported above the operator's compartment at a fixed elevation. Positioned beneath the first overhead canopy is an operator's seat securely positioned on the platform to provide an operator's station from which the machine is operated. Positioned in underlying relation with the first overhead canopy is a second overhead canopy that extends forwardly from the operator's station. The first and second canopies provide for complete overhead protection of an operator. The second overhead canopy is pivotally connected at one end to the machine frame and includes at the opposite end a control panel which is suspended downwardly from the second overhead canopy to a position opposite the operator's seat. Suitable height adjustment means, such as a fixed length or piston cylinder assembly, is connected to the second overhead canopy to permit adjustments in the elevation of the second canopy and the control panel. With this arrangement not only is the second canopy adjustable relative to the first, but the control panel may be repositioned on the platform to allow a change in the position of the controls to suit the operator.

    • Systems and methods are provided for a modular shelter that is suited for use as a safety chamber in an underground working environment. The shelter includes at least two wall units connected along a substantially sealed seam, a base unit that extends substantially throughout a floor plan of the shelter, and a roll cage that surrounds an outer extent of the shelter above the floor plan. The shelter may be configured to maintain a pressurized state in a closed condition. Each of the at least two wall units may share a substantially common shape and substantially common dimension, and may form a part of a wall, ceiling, and floor of the shelter. The shelter can also include various atmospheric control, circulation, and purge systems, and exterior and soft seal doors to assist in maintaining a livable atmosphere in the safety chamber.
