    • A spinning apparatus winds a strand onto a yarn package by relatively rotating a flyer and the yarn package about an upright axis so as to wind the strand in a succession of turns around the package by a flyer finger movable axially relative to the package. Each successive layer of turns is shorter than the preceding one so that the finished package has an axially upwardly tapered upper end. After substantially completely forming the package the rotation is generally stopped to leave the flyer in a position with the finger below the upper end of the last layer of turns formed on the package. Then the package and finger are relatively axially moved until the finger is generally at the upper end of the first layer of turns formed on the package. The flyer and package are then relatively rotated forward, that is in the same direction as when the package was being formed, through at least one half revolution about the axis so as to form a loop of the strand around the upper package end. Slack is then created in the strand upstream of the package and the finger is moved downward below the level of the upper end of the outer layer. Finally the strand is cut below the level of the upper end of the outer layer.

A device exerting contact pressure (13, 14, 15) urges the second belt (12) during operation against the whorls (11) with an adjustable force so that the belt (12) exerts, by means of friction, a small braking force on the whorls (11) running faster than the belt (12). The contact pressure device (13, 14, 15) can be switched over in order to press the second belt (12) against the whorls (11) with a substantially greater force. Upon shutoff of the spinning machine, the contact pressure device (13, 14, 15) is switched over so that the decelerating second belt (12) exerts a substantially greater friction force on whorls (11) and rapidly brakes the thread guide members (7) concomitantly.

    • The slack of a rove is actually developed by a time difference between the time point at which the rove is supplied simultaneously with the pushing down of a start button of a flyer frame, and the time point at which the winding of the rove commences after the presser has been pressed against the bobbin. The removing of the rove slack must be performed before the flyer frame attains its normal high speed operation. On the basis of this knowledge, the method according to this invention includes operating the flyer frame at a relatively low speed for a predetermined time period before the flyer frame is rotated at its normal high speed. During this time period, any slack of the rove can be removed.

Finally the package is raised to sever the roving upstream of the package.
